JMy son was diagnosed with autisim 10 years ago (when he was young he is 10 now.) My first thought was poor him. As I have seen him grow, I have seen more and more of my own life repeated.

I was all just such a waste. I didn't deserve to be abused just because I was different. All because I am genetically incapable of useless smalltalk.

I find it odd that I found a site called "Wrong Planet". As a child I would tell my mother that I was an alien sent to study human life. It was the only way I could come to terms with being so different.

She thought I was insane,

I just had Aspergers.

You think that when a sixth grader comes and says that he does not want to live anymore - that you would do something for your own child.

You would think.

I had posted to your other comment,
How did you get a diagnosis for him at that age? I read they can diagnose children young as 2 and 3, but at newborn thru age 1? I didn't know they could make a diagnosis at that young age, unless there are new techniques. It took the school several years of observations before they concluded A.S.

I gave you the whole sorted story on the other post. I reposted here because I didn't want to hog Lisa's thread yet at the same time I had left something of a personal note for her so I didn't want to delete the other.

Thank you for replying, and thank you for caring.

Thank you for replying, and thank you for caring. you are right the diagnosis was officially handed down at about age three. My wife and I were in denial for a good long while. We were trying to get to the root of a speech delay, other factors included flapping hands and lining all of my coins up in a row sorted by size. These are behaviors he has grown out of (mostly).
I edit it in my mind, because after four other kids I see that from the get go he was different. He was laden with sensory issues and was very different from my other children. We always referred to it as him and the other three (we just had the new addition). We were blessed latter with twins and two babies were easier than he was.
We were shunted into the special school district to a school that was intent on dissecting the child we loved and wanted to protect. We now home school and just use the school system for those therapies that we cannot provide (i.e. OT). He has actually been done with those for a while but we are still looking for social skills training for him.
We were lucky to have a good pediatrician who had an Autistic Step son. She actually started talking about it shortly after he had turned two.
He did start talking, and he is now for the most part your everyday 10 year old boy. I will not stand by and let him be crucified like I was.

I just went through school at the edge of the school yard (to avoid being crucified, and when sitting in class, stayed in the corner as much as possible.

Everything you describe sounds so much like the story of my life. I am happy, if they've found ways to diagnose A.S. that young, or perhaps, some doctors are becoming more aware of it.

When my son was diagnosed they had just moved Aspergers onto the Autism spectrum the neurologist said that 20 years ago (from that time) that our son would not have been diagnosed. They had in fact loosened the qualification for being Autistic.

Again we were also lucky to have the right pediatrician.

Playgrounds were the worst. And summer time without any friends...

How is your life now? Have you found ways to make peace with the world around you?

I learned how to be invisible, and how not to get noticed. <sarcasm> That is a handy skill when you are going in for a job interview. </sarcasm>

Oh, I still attract attention... trouble loves me... I duck under the radar but like a heat seeking missile...
Anyway, I guess since the diagnoses last autumn and this spring, (my 3 children... surprise surprise) -- I was looking at the symptoms for such a long time.... but sort of held-back from seeking exams.... but knew it explained my entire life and I met up with a Quack in the process, who was suppose to do an assessment/diagnosis... that was a complete 1/2 day wasted. In the middle of describing... one of the key symptoms.. socially clumsy and not knowing when I do rude things (like interrupting or whatnot) and the Quack told me so arrogantly, "What you're describing to me isn't Aspergers. If you were Aspergers you wouldn't care if you hurt anyone's feelings." Whooooah, I swear, it took effort to control a meltdown in her office, and all the way driving home, and when I got home ... I told my daughter about the QUACK... and was Aspergering all over the place... the worker who set me up with the QUACK confessed that they'd asked that woman to "brush up" on Autism.

So, she wasn't qualified to do an assessment to begin with. :(

It ruined my week... and the following weeks and I'm still annoyed.

But I KNOW I KNOW the truth... deduce why three kids are confirmed on the Autism spectrum, and I'm still here with no confirmation because of an incompetant "professional".

Since knowing its Aspergers (and I KNOW IT IS :x for crying out loud) -- I've found some inner peace with myself.... my entire lifetime makes sense for the first time... and no bonafide QUACK is going to deprive me of that.
