Those two pics at the top seem totally wrong to me, the top one looks a C cup, the next one down a B cup!! Where did all this pretend D and DD stuff come from?

It's not wrong, it's absolutely right. See my previous posts here.
And there's no one D cup (other too).

Bras will vary in fit even within the same brand of bra. I worked at a bra store, and some bra styles would run smaller than others within the same brand. You basically need to find a bra that fits you. To have cleavage I think a push up bra is what you need. Demi cups help too I think. There are bras made for various reasons: support, cleavage, and adding size for example.

Yeah, I need a push up. I'm a 40C/42D and I can't make cleavage with most bras. I'd have to buy one on my own though because Mom thinks having cleavage is naughty. :(

Every bra should give support, optionally cleavage or extra size. Wrong sized pushup pushes, but breast tissue under armpits. So boobs become more smaller than they really are. Like here, it's thick padded bra, 32B:

And this is soft cup balconette, without any padding, 28DD:

Thats where its confusing because I thought the letter meant the actual breast size and the numbers how big around the chest..e.g. a 38C and a 34C both have the same size breasts, but different chest size as measured with a tape measure.

Hell no. Cup means only cone's height. If you change the base, volume changes too.

34C is smaller than 38C.
44A is bigger than 30J in volume, but is wide and flat.

90% weight of the boobs should be supported by band. Straps are only to make it all stable.
So you shouldn't wear bigger band size than you're under bust. Choose smaller. If you're 76 cm, choose size 70 (32), not 80 (36).

See this: http://www.atlastravel.nazwa.pl/mini/
Under: very tight
In: loose
Convert to cms and check the size.

I explained it all a lot here: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postp2773662.html#2773662
