I grew up in that time frame where if you weren't 'normal' you were ADD and they wanted to put you on ridlin. my mother fought that. but knew that there was something. I was always a social outcast never able to make friends. relationships never last long and the only way I interact with the world is through my computer
I remember when I reluctantly approached counseling. My life was in complete shambles and the abyss due to horrible socialization skills and failed interactions -- so many blunders and misjudgments... and well, I had went so long alone, I was diagnosed with outright PTSD upfront, no questions asked. I was desperate due to traumatic nightmares...
Anyway... they did what I asked. They prescribed something for nightmares. I begged them for something to make me happier, 'cos of the horror going on in my life at that moment, (but I'm not bipolar)... I was an undiagnosed Aspergers Syndrome person, Autism was never suggested... but I took what they prescribed for PTSD and asked the prescribing Doc
"Will these pills make me friendlier... where people will like me? Where I can get along better with people?" (That was in 1995). I knew there was some mysterious underlying issue that had consumed my life... where all I had was isolation. He (the prescribing doc) looked at me sooooo strange, like my question went over his head, or at least in one ear and out the other.
There's no magic bullets for Aspergers/Autism ... no cure.... no medication.
