First an observation, there's a difference between friends and people who you know. You're on the Titanic with everyone you know and you have your own personal lifeboat with room for you and up to twenty people, who do you invite inside? They're your friends.

Now, personally, I have very few friends but I know a lot of people.

For me, autistic one, two persons is enough. It's pointless to tell you I want more, because it's not true.
I'd like to know more people, but not to keep them close.

Now I don't have any friend :(

I'd rather have a few close friends, than a load of casual mates.

At any given point in my life I have had a maximum of:

1 innermost friend

4 inner circle

Up to about 8 good buddies / close associates

Maybe 20 I like to talk to now and then.
omting else, of course.
Right now, it is 1 inmost, 4 inner [one of these I am not in touch with], maybe 6 fairly close.

Family is s

I much prefer having a small circle of very close friends to having a bunch of casual friends.

I've never had to choose between the two options, so I'm not sure which I'd pick. Hypothetical options are a waste of my time, so I won't worry about it until it happens. (which is never)

Few. I couldn't handle a lot of friends.

I have one close friend and that's about it.

As for my preference, I would like to have two or three more close friends, but having about a dozen "second circle" friends would be too overwhelming for me, but they wouldn't understand me anyway, so in order to have that many, I'd also have to not be autistic... and then I would just not be me anymore, would I?

A true friend is someone you can call in the middle of the night when your car has broken down and you need a tow into town.

A true friend is someone you can call in the middle of the night to bail you out of jail.

A true friend is someone who will look after you when you are sick and nurse you back to health.

You are blessed if you have one or two such friends.

Only a few at most. The more people that get involved, the less time and attention you can keep up with each of them. For example, on social networking websites, for those that have tons of people on their friend list, I'm certain that they don't all keep up with each other at much, if at all. With just a few friends, it's a lot easier to manage and have those that are closer to you than more friends where there's a greater chance of misunderstandings and problems.
