I mailed Alex, but he just stepped out and can't help right now...and I really need this help in the next 20 minutes or we could be losing a client.

Anyone proficient enough at linux to help with this question, please pitch in!

I installed Mandriva Linux, after much wrangling to find a distro that offered the kernel module I needed to make this stupid external modem work: Smartlink External USB modem . Word was, It had the kernel module I needed.

It doesn't work! I tinkered, I played and I found Puppy Linux DOES work with that modem....one problem though....client doesn't WANT puppy, he wants PC Linux OS, or Mandriva, or something similarly large and beefy.

I have tried using the manufacturers drivers, no luck.

I really am at my wits end! I have tried my usual forums and IRC channels....no one has a clue

HELP!! !

Whizper (on behalf of my Techie husband)

I'm at doctor office on my laptop, so I may disappear at any point, but I will try to help.

First I need to know this:
is the driver a module or is it compiled into kernel?
