What is roleplaying?: The dictionary defines it as, "to assume the attitudes, actions, and discourse of (another)". In simple terms, it is pretending you're someone else and collaborating a story with other roleplayers, like playing a game, only with text!

How do I roleplay?: Simple! To roleplay, you merely find a thread which is dedicated to roleplay. You then adhere to its rules. Once you are sure that you understand, you make your post. Your posts consists of interactions with the world and other characters. They are to be descriptive and thought out. Since this is in text, you want your posts to be as descriptive as possible. This means use of words focused on imagery. An example:

Quote:
**It is a chilly day, the Autumn air feeling crisp and somewhat foreboding. Ruth Palif steps forward onto the steps of the school, raising her hand to gently part the fringe resting against her brow. Her jeans are loose but comfortable, and her shirt is a fitting white camisole. Her shoes are black and white converse.

Why should I roleplay?: Roleplaying is very fun, I feel, because you get to do something you wouldn't usually do. You can be a king, be a criminal, or just be normal in someone else's shoes. I love to pretend, and roleplaying is synonymous with pretending. It is a hobby that most people have, like me for example.

What are some roleplaying terms?:

Out-Of-Character: Something said on the forum that is not your character speaking or an action being taken place. (OOC for short)
In-Character: The exact opposite of the above. (IC for short)
Uses of Asterisks: Asterisks (*) are used for emotions, or actions.
Actions (Emotions): In-Character events that are taking place. **Name smiles, and posts on Wrong Planet.
Metagame: Using out of character known information in character. An example of this is seeing a character's name on a post, and then having your character say it to him without learning it first.
Powergame: Doing something to another character, like punching or killing, without attempting first. You must always ATEMPT to do things to another character.

When should I keep in-character?: At all times. Going out of character is against the rules and it makes for crappy role play. Do not do it.

Can I say internet speak and emoticons during roleplay?: No. Shakespeare didn't say rofl or use smiley faces, so you should not either. It makes your paragraph look clustered, hard to read, and plain stupid. It also is unprofessional.
