Good thing I don't live in such a backwards place, I see a new addition to my Christmas list... :D

It's actually quite dangerous. It's like having a 50 mile long needle. You could poke someone's eye out with it, and by that I mean, blind them quite easily.

The strongest laser I've worked with was 5mW, and that was bright enough such that the beam was visible with the lights on with no other particles in the air other than existing dust.

A 1W laser would not be something you'd want to look at from close up even indirectly.

Oh yes Australians (myself included) are "backwards" because we do not want some idiot with a laser pointer to bring down a plane, that makes perfect sense.

It does mention it was created for military purposes. <.< Not for anything else... <.<

Nope, you're backwards because you react to every little incident with ridiculous new laws and prohibitions. Again, thankfully I don't live in such a place, though keeping the morons away from the levers of power is a truly Sisyphean task even with a slightly less bovine populace.

It's the sort of power I have used for laser displays at rock concerts, You can easily burn hashish with it :)

also used to perform light shows for bar bands and at clubs. this was before such small, strong systems were available. great fun. i still have two lasers, one is a 10mw sprecta physics he-ne. huge glass tube and separate power supply. now the same power is available in a 20 dollar laser pointer. the other is an argon ion gas laser from ion laser technology. it's about 100 mw. looks like something from star trek. used titanium smoke powder.

a one watt portable laser is a dangerous item. people have and will be arrested for shining at airplanes/helicopters.

I think it's safe guys...the site says they have 0% IR.

Aren't all lasers powered by a giant ruby? I couldn't find any 6.5536 mhz rubies at Mouser. Any suggestions?

giant rubies? i'll assume you're serious. most lasers now are solid state, use diodes. most before that were gas lasers, using inert gases. neon, with helium produced red, argon produced blue-green, krypton produced an off white.
don't think anyone makes ruby lasers now, too inefficient.

a one watt solid state laser can be hand held. a one watt gas laser (visible light) is a giant tube with huge power supply and had to be water cooled.

cutting/welding lasers used to be co2, not a visible beam, don't know what's used now.

been out of the biz for a long time. can't wait for handheld diode laser that will produce 590nm yellow light. that's cheap. very expensive at present.

oh yeah, a one watt laser will blind you, will burn you, will start a fire. not a toy.

I wasn't serious, I was saying that because it seem that in the movies, a giant destructive laser seems to require a rare ruby or crystal.
