Hello, I'm new here, I recently started posting asking advice about my AS daughter in the parenting forum. My son is AS as well.
I'm really just posting here to say thank you, not just for the responses to my problems, but also for all the other threads as well, particularly those concerning children. We had a long wait before my son was diagnosed... we're in the UK, and he was seeing a psychologist by the time he was 3, but whilst the psychologist was a very nice chap, I honestly think he didn't know much about AS at all. Our main problem with my son was his terrible rages, and the psychologist told us that was 'almost the opposite of autistic spectrum behaviour'... he was adamant that AS children don't rage ... I read some books about AS children, and I kept on thinking 'well that does sound like my son, but T said he isn't AS...'... anyway, my son is now 16 and was diagnosed earlier this year, by people who really know their stuff, and I'm grateful to them for giving us the clarity we have needed for so long. The good news is that we muddled through without a diagnosis, we got things wrong for a long time, but finally I started trusting my instincts, and we muddled through and my son is doing well now. So reading all the threads posted by parents coping with raging AS youngsters, well my heart goes out to all of you, I know how hard it is, and hearing how hard you all find it makes me feel better about how hard it was for us. So, thank you for sharing your stories and problems and your courage and your joy, because knowing that other people are out there riding their roller coaster does help me on my own roller coaster.
