I've noticed here lately, that my DS has to touch almost everything. When I'm making him a sandwich, he has to run his finger across the mayo, or ice cream when I'm scooping it out the carton, even the ice (freezer burn) in the freezer.
Is this normal (as far as behavior in our kids)?
And (if it is), Why must y'all touch everything (yes this question is for the aspies and auties)?

I have seen fellow kids in school rub their hands along lockers and rails. I do the same. I think we are attracted to the feel of certain things.

It's because of the texture and sensory experience of touching things. Can you work on engaging him in sensory play (play with rice, beans, water, Moon Sand, play dough, shaving cream, chalk, soap...) each day for a while and then reminding him that it's only okay to touch during playtime?

My son does that. In his case, the OT explained it as being related to his hypomobility, in that with the loose joints not all the nerve signals sent actually get through to the brain, so a person with the condition is driven to seek more sensory input than normal just to get a sense of where they are in the air.

And there may just be some plain old sensory seeking behavior, as well.

My son does it without any realization he is doing it. It's not about curiosity or anything like that; it is very much at the instinctive / compulsion level.

My son touches everything too---I think part of it is that he just likes the feel of some things, but some of it, I think is curiosity, or just a constant need to be doing something. My son is 5, and he is still reaching and grabbing for things that he shouldn't have. Drives me crazy!! !!

my son (almost 9) touches everything, he is ALWAYS fiddling with something, even if it's just his own hands/fingers. He's always been this way. He is very sensory seeking though. My other to children don't do this, so I've always assumed it was an AS thing.
