I use Aspergian too, but if you don't like that either, just wait until 2013 and your problem will be solved. We'll all just be autistic.

I don't see anything wrong with it.

@Jutty: can you honestly say "Aspie" with dignity?

@League_Girl: Good, but too long

What's wrong with "Aspie"? I'm usually pretty derisive of nicknames in general, and even I don't see anything wrong with that particular one.

I hate 'Aspie' too - I think it sounds belittling and foolish . . . so I avoid the whole matter by saying I have Autism. Which is also true.

I've been trying to use "Autist," or, on the rare occasion "Spectrumite," but there is probably a better word for it out there somewhere. Heh, thinking about this, I get the image of, "This programming has been close captioned for the socially impaired."

This link might have something though . . . Lone Wolf Synonyms

I think "Anomics," would best describe us . . . to a degree at least:

anomic a·no·mic (ə-nŏm'ĭk, ə-nō'mĭk)
adj.
Socially unstable, alienated, and disorganized. n.
A socially unstable, alienated person.

. . . or . . .

a state or condition of individuals or society characterized by a breakdown or absence of social norms and values, as in the case of uprooted people.

I try not to say it full stop outside this forum. If I disclose my dx, I say I have aspergers and then try not mention it again. If I have to, I try to minimise it by just saying AS.

It just makes me cringe whenever i see aspies on this website, or whenever my mom says it.

"Autist," seems OK
"Spectrumite" is too close to "Speculite"
and "Anomic" is too close to "anemic".

But then again, maybe it is just me...

You do realize that the new DSM is already more than 5 years overdue, because they can't agree on so many terms and classifications. I'm not counting any chickens just yet. :?

And really, is Aspie such a big deal it deserves its own thread to complain about? Don't like it? Don't use it.

I prefer anything to ASS BURGERS. How about a campaign to get people to pronounce Ahz-pair-gur correctly?

It is not a big deal. Some people like it some people don't. If you don't like it than don't use it. I personally like the term and I and plenty of ASPIES will continue using it. Please learn you are not always right and the world does not revolve around you.
