Do/did you like school?
I do now. I know I detested it thoroughly for quite awhile.
And I know many Aspies in person who still hate it.
I just wanted to see how many Aspies hate(d) it and how many like(d) it, as there are obviously far more people with AS on the interwebz than the amount of Aspies I know in person.

Perhaps you could share with us why you find school better now than before? I never did like it.

I too have felt differently about school at different times. I liked some schools I went to better than others. I ticked "neutral" on the poll, but the answer "it varied" would have been more accurate.

On the wider issue of schooling children on the autism spectrum, what do people here think about the inclusive education vs. segregated education debate? Should ASD kids be sent to mainstream schools, or to special schools? I can see valid arguments on both sides of the debate, and I haven't been 100% convinced by either side. I would very much like to be able to make up my mind.

School was a torture chamber, where other kids felt free to assault, persecute, and tease me for no reason at all. I hated it right up to college, but knew that as an adult I had more options open to me. Plus, people in college were too busy to gang up on me.

I liked school. It gave structure to my life. It was challenging, though, but I'll still miss it.

The results so far are pretty close to what I predicted. :P

School is a necessary evil.

There's a hidden curriculum behind compulsory schooling. The schooling most of the world has today would never have been established if people were given the option of whether or not to attend; that is without compulsory attendance laws none of it would ever have been possible. It was set up by rich industrialists to make people just smart enough to work like machines in the early industrial factories, but very much stupid enough to passively accept all of the increasingly awful jobs and the structure of hierarchy in both the economy and social realms. For a self motivated and independent individual like myself and most others that I know the experience is a nightmare, a veritable torture chamber and a nexus of frivolous activities and never ending boredom. Yes, hate is in fact an understatement. This is not even factoring in that I was segregated for the entire duration of high school and was basically always the "special" kid. Anyone on the same page as me?

Want to find out for yourself some of the unmentioned facts about the glorified daycare establishment? Read the books "Weapons of Mass Instruction", "Dumbing us Down", and "Underground History of American Education", all by John Taylor Gatto. You can get a few of these for free at johntaylorgatto(dot)com.

at least as far as public high schooling is concerned.
college can be a different story, some private schools can be a different story.

i am a big advocate of homeschooling

I like school as a general concept, but thoroughly detest this country's system and my school in particular.

Elementary school wasn't too bad untill sixth grade. At that point kids noticed I was different and started to pick on me. I went to a very small school with only 10 kids in my grade. We lived in a very rural area. Jr High and High school were another story. I went to a large school and it was a nightmare. I was picked on and didn't fit in anywhere. Teachers didn't even notice me. I barely spoke and started to have panic attacks in 8th grade. I only made it through part of 9th grade and had to leave. I had lots of conseling but the true cause of my problems were not discovered untill I was well into my adulthood. Luckilly I have been able to make a living with my special interest. I could go on and on. sometimes I think I am my own special interest.

There were some good things about school - a few interesting classes, a few really great teachers, some decent friends and some fun clubs. I hated most of it though. The kids treated me like I was an idiot, most of the teachers didn't like me, most of the classes were so ridiculously dumbed down that I didn't learn anything in them, and just the whole setting - like being confined to a noisy prison.. bleh.

I hated school, with a passion. My peers were too full of themselves, to care about the impact that their cruel words had on my feelings. They hated me, and accused me of having a soiling problem, that wouldn't develop, until 2006. They only cared about each other and they left me out. I'm glad that I'm out of school.

I may have appreciated from time to time then, but in terms of General Education (up to 12th grade), I don't think I'd ever want to re-do it.

Can't think of anything good about it. :/ It wasn't like bullying took up every second of it (though it did exist most of the time), but just all in all, I don't feel like I graduated high school and am going to miss it. I'm glad I never have to do it again.

Hate multiple choice questions: The available choices never allow for a full telling!
My mother often retells how much me and my grades 1,2,3 teacher disliked each other (due to me going off and doing my own thing, or reading ahead in the class stories). My grade 4 teacher and mother had to deal with me failing to admit to having homework. Grade 5 I don't recall an ounce of the year - I was in a catholic school, and can't even remember teacher names, only that we had to write about first communion one day, and I had no idea what it was - Grades 6 to eight went well; I had a crush on this girl named Sarah, enjoyed learning about explorers and loved to write, all of which distracted me from the negatives. Grades 9 to 13 were crap on a stick as I fought to stay alive and sane. Marks went from 80's down to 55's by the end of it all.. primarily due to inept teachers who were often not experienced in their field (or in the case of my french teacher, their language). When I finally ended up in college, I discovered teachers with attitudes exist beyond highschool... And allowed them (the teachers!) to chase mee out. Loved Soil Science class though, as much as the grade 6 explorers in History stuff... Teacher would always head off on tangents and loved his topic.

There wasn't enough passion about their material in most of the teachers and most of the students were too passionate about sex, drugs, and popularity / social posturing. Maybe the teachers were too. If school had been about passing on information and learning things, maybe I would have enjoyed it a bit more.
