I recommend using a mix of "straight, left, right" and landmarks, so people will know where to actually turn. For instance, you could say something like this. "Start out by turning right, and keep going straight. When you see a reflecting pool with little fountains, turn right again. Go about 200 feet until you see a big pine tree. Go around it and look for a sign that says 'food court.' Once you see it, you're there." This is how I would give it, and most people should find this style understandable.
On a personal note, when I give directions in the city, I say "north, south, east, west", rather than "straight, left, right". Some people find this confusing, but I tell them which way is north after giving complete directions. I guess it happens because I visualize a map in my head and "draw" the route right on it, rather than think out how the route would be on the streets.
