While we all hate pollies, we should all remember this. A politician, at their very best, tries to please everyone, which we know is an impossible task.

What do you reckon?

Most politicians are vermin. One or two are good people. The rest are loyal voting fodder.

Well, we hate politicians because we believe that they aren't in it for our benefit but rather their own. I mean, I don't necessarily hate all politicians but I do believe that they tend to be corrupt or stupid and possibly both.

You don't survive for very long in that line of work if you're stupid. (you have to be cunning at least)

Corrupt........ without a doubt!! !

Politicians rely on statistics. That's all they care about. That's how they gauge public opinion.

Politicians never ask us what we want. They tell us what we want. The feedback is one-way, really. There is just no two-way communication. Local politics are better than national, because at least there are ways in which the townsfolk can get things done. Sure, it's still hard, but you can attend town meetings.

I would not want to be a politician. It's far too stressful. I couldn't be bothered with all the crap they have to put up with. Maybe I might write articles and stuff, or even organize a local event or rally, but that's about it.

My mom is a politician. Was on city council. She was actually pretty good.

Too bad her campaign was absolutely terrible this time around. So many things she should have known better about.

I probably could have done a better job of public speaking even with Asperger's Syndrome

She made a lot of really good policy, and helped keep things from breaking down into all kinds of petty bickering.

Maybe next time around I'll help with her campaign. Sure sounds like she needs it.

I dunno, I think all you need is a pretty face and possibly some money or something. I mean, the politician's advisors are probably the smart ones but the politicians themselves may or may not be that intelligent. Yeah, I can definitely see a strong pull for corruption though but still, considering that there are many politicians that cannot see beyond their noses and dispute things that are believed to be facts I do tend to question their intelligence.

I dislike most politicians, or at least most American politicians, because they have basically the same policies and most are almost completely controlled by the corporations who finance them.

I see what you're getting at now. Were talking about different kinds of intelligence. It's like the pigs Snowball and Napoleon in "Animal Farm". (Trotsky and Stalin in real life respectively) Trotsky was without doubt the intellectual superior of Stalin, but he underestimated Stalin's ruthlesness and cunning. Trotsky was cerebral, Stalin was political. Guess who won.........

Yeah, I know about Trotsky and Stalin and I have read Animal Farm. What I am talking about are the American politicians that don't know their face from their behind(this is assuming that there is a difference). At least it just seems that they don't know the difference, I mean, perhaps they are cunning, perhaps they are geniuses even but they don't inspire my confidence. Just think about Dan Quayle, the man who misspelled potato, and you will see what I am getting at. Perhaps I am being a bit too cynical but I don't think our government is being run by masterminds.

Ok, so you get my point about thinking they are idiots. At the very least they might be biased to the point where they do not keep their minds open to what is going on and just see it from their ideological slant. Whatever, the case is the result is the same, a few people who believe that global warming is a myth, and a president who wants to overstimulate the economy and raise deficit rather stupidly. I mean, Bush is a republican, right? Republicans believe in smaller government, right? Then why is he running up a massive deficit and allowing for a massive budget and stuff and not really making his government smaller but rather increasing its power. What our politicians do does not make sense and I think it probably holds true for all sides but the Right's flaws are really showing lately.

The way I see it, the decisions and policies that leaders implement are the result of back-room deals. The "ideological slant" is simply used as cover to explain away what really happened.

It never makes sense for politicians to quit spending regardless of party. Spending other peoples money is how the derive their power. (they also get power by making sure societies problems never get fixed!)

What they do makes sense from their perspective, namely keep their hold on power. The flaws of the right are showing now because they're in power. Many of the problems society faces today is the result of the Idiot Liberalism of the 1960's. 20 years from now, we'll be living with the consequences of the Idiot Conservatism of the 2000's

Yeah, I suppose the first part is probably somewhat true, I was just trying to account for idiocy.

The second part is true too, spending shows that they have power and some people thought that FDR tried to keep the US in the depression so you would not be the first to think the latter part.

The third part is true too. Many of the current problems are due to entitlement programs that we can no longer keep up. I am mostly bashing the right because they are in power and because they have had power for a while, Clinton was in my eyes and alright president(probably because he had a divided government and really could not make too many ideologically extreme decisions because of that anyway) but recent Republicans have been sort of failing in my eyes.
