I have some serious sensory issues when eating. I can't eat anything with a certain texture - anything that reminds me of mucous absolutely disgusts me. So yogurt, super thick soups, tapioca, those kinds of things are out. I also can't deal with most meats, if there are any chunks I'll throw up.

The big issue with this is that I'm made fun of for it. Like I'm being childish for not eating food that disgusts me. It's not like I just think it's "icky" and refuse to try it - if I do try it, I WILL throw up. No one seems to understand this.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Absolutely. My mouth is all about the crunchy. I can't stand things with the wrong textures - anything "slippery," anything "gristly," anything that's "smooth" in the wrong way, or "slimy." (All in quotation marks because I can't quite describe what it is - I just know.)
Things that hit those buttons in a big way include meat that is not perfectly lean (actually, anything fatty; it leaves this kind of "lipid-y" texture in my mouth that I can't stand), the insides of cooked tomatoes, and so on. I used to gag involuntarily on such things as a child and my mother would tell me to stop being so melodramatic. Nowadays, I just don't go near them.
Know what else? The fluoride trays at the dentist's office, the ones you have to bite so that they can treat your teeth with fluoride. For that matter, the things they use to take impressions of your teeth, too. And the polish they use. I actually go in telling the dentist, "You can poke, prod, scrape and chop as much as you like in there, but you will not be doing anything fluoride-related, you will not be taking moulds, and you will not be polishing. I know the lack of polish means you have to do all sorts of more unpleasant things to me instead. I don't care."

And it is physical. It will make me tremble and be unable to sit still. It will gag me and make me sick. That's going to happen. So I just don't let it. No one's made fun of me yet, but I'm sure there are dentists who mutter behind my back!

I wouldn't explain to people that you'd throw up. People probably won't take it seriously. I'm very used to having my diet criticized, and am described as extremely picky. I will eat only a few different foods and they must all be on a specific spoon/plate/cup used each time.

If this is people outside of your home I would just explain that you're trying to eat better, or that you already ate (eat something beforehand so you won't be lying.)

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to work. It doesn't matter how hard I try to tell someone I don't want something, they push it on me! Recently I had a birthday luncheon at work. I've been trying to lose weight and eat better, so I requested no cake. I said we can do fruit, or healthy popsicles, or whatever, just NO CAKE. I let my boss know that if she brings it, I will not eat it. She makes the worst cake anyway - it's slimy and weird, so there were two reasons I didn't want it. And yet, she still brought it in, and was completely offended when I said I wasn't having a piece. I warned you, what the hell?!

Now I just tell everyone I am a SUPER picky eater. I avoid going out to eat with anyone. There are still weird situations but they're not as bad as they were in highschool, for example.

Jeyradan - I've been to the dentist once since I was little. Thankfully they didn't use any trays on me. But I have to do in for fillings soon. Do they do anything like that when you're getting fillings? The polishing goo wasn't so bad but I don't know if I could deal with anything goopier.

buryuntime - out of curiosity, why do you have to have your food on a certain plate? I know my plate has to pass my inspection - no spots, has to be the right size for what I'm eating, etc. But I've never used the same plate every day.

I'm the same. I can't eat anything too creamy, like yogurt. People laugh when I say I don't like thick creamy white stuff in my mouth but I'm being serious. I hate pies if they have different textures in them like apple; reminds me of vomit. Meat sauce does too...

^this. I couldn't really describe that sort of meat texture that rubs me the wrong way but that's about accurate.

Also, I can't tolerate the smell of meat. When someone's cooking it I can just smell the blood and fat and it makes me feel ill.

I dont like wet mushy foods. Things that get soggy make me gag. I used to have a big problem with mashed potatoes, but I got over that by eating "real" mashed potatoes. I have to pour small bowls of cereal, any sign of soggy cereal will make me sick. I hate stuffing, I hate pancakes, gravy on my biscits is nasty.

I have never been able to eat bananas. Well, I say never, I never could as a child, and it has only been in the past two years that I have made myself eat them, and it makes my skin crawl. I can have them in smoothies, but a banana... as a banana... ugh.
Also, tomatoes. i can just about bear small cherry tomatoes, but anything like beef tomatoes, and I'll gag. Same with yoghurt with bits, melon, oranges... for the most part, I try and make myself eat certain things, but I'll usually run away from melon. Apple pie... ugh. Soft apples... ugh. Celery... ugh. Cucumber, oh dear lord.

Oh yeah... I have my bad texture foods. I get sick, twitchy, have to shake it off while flapping my hands around my head going, "Blaaaaaaaggggghhhhhhh" Just eh... gives me heebies, jeebies, and overall ick. I had to get up and leave the living room last night because my daughter wants spaghetti tacos and the mix of that crap is more than I can tolerate and she was just talking in detail about it. I would be physically sick if I had to watch her eat that crap. I get the meat smell business as well... sometimes just the smells of things are enough to make me gag. The worst is peanut butter and syrup on pancakes. I find that offensive on sooooo many levels. I do not know who came up with that, but I want to hit them for it. :eew:

I can't eat sandwich spread or fruit cake. Both foods make me gag and/or throw up. Also, peanut butter makes me easily irritable and sensitive to touch. I guess it's okay since I don't miss any of those foods anyway.

Mushrooms are gross. Like chewing on an earlobe. Blech.

I'm having serious appetite issues lately. Like I get hungry, but nothing at all looks good to eat. Either it's something I've never liked, so it makes me want to throw up, or I just want to throw up in general. It's pretty frustrating.

Can't I just get IV nutrition? It would be SO much easier.

i cannot eat certain textures. anything made with onions through it, my body is able tell even though my concious brain can't and i do throw up. onions are ingredients in the majority of meals and as you could imagine, my diet is limited. it really angers me that nt people do not understand my aversion to this and cant see how i know when there are onions present when they cant detect them theirselves, i have been told it is psychological and if i opened up my mind i would b able to do it. i have now learned to ignore adverse reactions as i have been in many heated discussions on this subject. if the problem was psychological, why after 29 years of really wanting to eat a bannana have i never been able to without being sick?
