I don't think it's apathy you're talking about.

From my Aspie perspective, what you have quoted means that a person will find an interest within either A, B or C if nothing obvious about them interests him/her.

Even when I care very little about an issue, I can usually think of how it connects to another issue about which I am passionate.

It is called compromise, and yes, I do do this.

For example, my shoes wore through recently and upon inquiry, I discovered that model was no longer on the shelves. I was quite annoyed at the prospect of having to find a new model of shoes, so I scoured the internet for the old model hoping some would be sitting in some clearance warehouse in China somewhere (I stopped for a moment to appreciate the irony that that which came from China, eventually returned to China as a discount item), but unfortunately I had no such luck.

A few weeks later, knowing it would rain soon, I decided to check again. Much to my surprise, I found a pair on eBay that happened to be my size. Unfortunately it was not the color I wanted, but I compromised and bought them anyway.

I'm going to have them dyed, but I did buy them.

It sounds a lot like indifference.

I think my mother calls that go-along-get-along.

After rereading definitions, I concede that "compromise" (from M-W: a concession to something derogatory or prejudicial) might also suffice if the concession created dissatisfaction in the person.
