I got this in e-mail.

"My wife came home and saw the 6-pack I'd just purchased sitting on the counter. She told me money's tight, and we just can't afford beer for a while. The next week, she came home with a bag full of makeup and perfume; which she told me cost
$75.00. I calmly said if we can't afford beer, we certainly can't afford all of this prissy crap but she said she wanted to look pretty for me. I said 'that's what the beer was for!' I'm not sure if she's coming back or not."

I smiled.

I didn't get it at first. I might have laughed if I'd not had to spend a few minutes trying to work it out.

I read it, and I just saw it as a bunch of words. I read it again, and I understood the part about the beer and the makeup. I didn't find any humorous connection with how beer makes a woman pretty, though. Beer makes people drunk, unless the guy is referring to being drunk as being pretty, but that doesn't make too much sense. I think too literally for stuff like this.

It's a common expression that beer makes the opposite sex look more attractive as the night wears on (and the person drinking gets more intoxicated). Derived from the fact that as you get more drunk and your impulses are impared, you might be more inclined to sleep with someone you normally would not have.

It wasn't that funny to begin with. The guy is basically telling the wife she isn't pretty.
