Flower first to come first must go.
By this rule flirting Crocus comes to fall.

He manifests himself in soldiers cries
And suicides atop tall ledges without eyes.

He comes on bravely, promenades the field,
Surveys the situation, will not yield.

And now before him stretched in a mighty throng
The army of the Backward marches on.

He stands erect and armed prepares to fight
But has no chance to win on this bleak night.

He sounds alarm; they charge and crash his lines
Until there is no sound and all is night.

This army marches round and quarters near.
They sentry all his legions dead this night.

And in the morning some perhaps remain as bleak winds blow
And other legions gather to remove at last the foe.

He was the first and this is true and he was brave
But this did not give victory nor was he saved.

Crocus was the first to battle Snow
And others will follow hence
and many more will go.
