I am not sure what all his problems were, other than diabetes. He may have had a breakdown, although I am not entirely sure that is what happened. I gather he has an eccentric guy anyway and the drugs probably only amplified those traits. I also gather that he had a strange sense of humour that even his best mates did not always understand. I can also see how someone, already in a bit of a fragile state, might be willing to give up on society completely if he felt his best mates sold him out and abandoned him. Maybe not for 30 years, but I can understand where that thinking may come from.
