I saw a segment on Adderall on TV last week. I tooks on the surface like Penicillin for Aspies! So, what's the dope? Does this stuff really work and how does one get a prescription for it? Please discuss.

Its used to treat ADHD. You goto a doctor that will prescrible it for that purpose.
One problem you will find is most doctors may try to first get you to try
non-stimulants. Those non-stimulants will only work for a smaller number of
people. Hence you may be forced to waste months on useless drugs. Adderall
is a mix of dextro and levo amphetamine. Most would say there is no point
in using levo-amphetamine. Dextroamphetamine itself is used for ADHD. For
that matter methamphetamine is longer acting and more cns selective but it
cost alot of money in the US/Canada and very few doctors will prescribe it.
Maybe phone doctors office and first ask "Do you treat adult ADHD". If you
get there tell them you tried wellbutrin,pro-vigal, streterra and they did not
work. And you have no history of drug abuse. You might mention your cousin
seems to do okay on dexedrine.

My psychitrist gave me a mos. free trial of adderall to try when i told him i thought i might has AS. It doesn't do anything for me, not even give me more energy which it is supposed to do. It made me feel tired. Now, i have a script for Focalin XR. I have not filled it yet.

Oh, well. it was the part about increased concentration and memory that appealed to me. Apparently, college students are abusing this stuff to get better grades. I guess it works better with "normal" folks than with Aspies and other Autistic types.

It's used to be treated for ADD and ADHD. They put me on it when I was little because they thought I had ADHD. Thankfully, I'm an Aspie.

I was diagnosed with ADD without Hyperactivity. I've been on Adderol for 10 years; 10 mg, twice a day. It works but it's not a cure all.

If I don't take it, I have difficulty driving. I pay attention to the novel stuff on the side of the road rather than the boring vehicles driving in front of me. It's like I don't see the signs or the other cars, but I can tell you exactly how many trash cans were on one side of the road! (Like that's useful.) Also, if I forget to take it, I have a lot of problems at work. I can't focus on a task or even remember the instructions. My ability to hyperfocus when I'm not on the meds is surprising even to me. I can still hyperfocus with the meds, but I can control it much better. I can even focus on boring stuff that I have no interest in; at least enough focus to complete something.

Adderol stays in your system for about 3 days. This is a good thing because if you run out, you have to go back to the doctor that perscribed you the medication and pick up a new prescription. Then you have to get it filled. There are no refills on it in most states since it is a controlled substance. I don't like not taking it so I'm usually pretty good about getting more (and the process of getting more also gets me out of work for a couple hours).

I prefer taking the regular Adderol over the Adderol XR. The reason for this is because I will take smaller amounts (0.5 dose instead of a whole dose) depending on what's going on that day. If I got up a noon then I only take one. If I'm going to work, I take the morning and afternoon dose. I never take over my daily dosage. I am wary of the Adderol XR because of potential sleeping difficulties. Adderol keeps me up (I never take naps after I've taken my afternoon dose) and if I take it too close to when I want to sleep, I can't. The Adderol XR takes too long to dissolve and I worry it will keep me up. It's nice to be able to modify your dosage to your day.

The side effects for me are very little. When I first started taking it, I noticed a little vertigo, but either I've gotten used to it or it's gone away. My mouth also was a little dryer...same for my eyes. It doesn't cause weight gain or make me sick to my stomach. I also noticed that my creativity level dropped a bit, but if driving, working and generally functioning are the price, I'm willing to pay. I'm not complaining.

Another thing about it: it has a slightly sweet, saccrine-y taste. It dissolves fairly quickly in your mouth.

I like it and I don't want to try any other medication. I say if your doctor is willing to let you try it, you should. It can't hurt.

I was on this for a while, though I think perhaps too high of a dosage. It gave me great energy and ability to get things done, but made all of my sensory issues many times worse. EVERYTHING bothered me to an extreme. I am going to try this again, but with a lower dose. I feel it has great potential, if I can take it without making me grumpier than I already am.

Adderall is amphetamine, aka speed. I've been on it, great drug for ADD but man they have to stop pumping it into 8th graders.

Now I take provigil (modafinil) which is an interesting drug, off-label for ADD it's for narcolepsy.. check it out I think it's a safer alternative.

Ephedrine + caffeine pills (slang "trucker's speed") also helps me with concentration, and I may have just broken some rule here but i'll be clear that ephedrine can cause heart attacks/heart problems. It's cheaper than having to pay for RX drugs, both over the counter. Again, some people freak out over ephedrine and it is even illegal in some states but honestly there are worse drugs out there.

Just a few comments. I've used adrafinil which is an analog of modafinil. I found
it did not help with my ADD. I follow an add forum and few people there seem to
benfit from it use alone.

The problem with ephedrine and caffeine , I took both heavily in college, is
the are not very CNS selective. The dose that you get enough CNS effects
is very dangerious and does not feel good to your body. Again for mild ADD they
may help but they are not perfect.

I'm like you before I knew I had ADD ,I thought the idea of million of kids using
stimulants was crazy. But their is no question in 8th grade I needed a stimulant
(I took no drugs). ADD is common like I'm guessing 5% that means alot of
kids may need the drugs. No the drugs are not ideal. A person has to decide if
the side effects are worth the gains. But millions see the pros of the drugs.

Nthing the 'it's for AD(H)D, not ASDs' comments. For the record, I was on it when I was younger (was misdiagnosed as having ADD), and it did absolutely nothing good for me and produced very nasty side effects of hyperactivity, permanent insomnia, and removed my appetite.
