So my 11 year-old son is clinically diagnosed with AS. After reading up on it, I realized that I probably am too. I fit every description so I do consider myself an aspie.

My current obsession is kayaking. My boy LOVES it!

That is such a joy to me.

His obsessions have been:

Thomas the Tank Engine
ANYTHING trains
Pokemon

So basically, all indoor activities and I am trying to help him "blend" more with the NT kids and have more diverse interests. Usually this fails miserably.

Then, I get my kayak and he loves it! All of a sudden he is open-minded to camping, fishing, etc... Anything kayak-related which really helps with integrating with regular people considering where we live hunting/fishing/killing bambi is a norm....

Just seeing him out on that kayak today.... all alone... at peace with himself and the world... enjoying nature... loving for all the same reasons I do... was so awesome! And the good thing is that it opens a whole new world for him... Other people who like to boat and camp, etc...

I can't tell you how happy I am and how happy he has been tonight afterwards...

Very rewarding indeed :D

I can get amazingly blissful in nature and so so happy it's not fair to others. Like one time, when I made it to a perfect spot hiking and I made it into the sun at a high point and right there I broke up laughing hysterically I had to restrain myself from literally rofl 'ing.

That sounds great you've found a wonderful way for your son to integrate and that he can appreciate nature similarly as I do. Also great to know what you (and your son) are dealing with throughout this life journey :)

My sons love being out in nature, if we can find spots with few or no people. We started to learn canoeing last summer as a family, and are all looking forward to more this year.

we live on a farm in the middle of stunning rural countryside, i think it really helps, Often after a majormelt down we will walk in the valley, last time a beautiful clear night, the stars and a barn owl flew over, being so close to nature is an absolute must for anyone, my son loves it, the walk home from school, the changing seasons somewhere you know so well, its the best therapy out there :D

My daughter's just started the assessment process, after my chat with a couple of depute heads at her school on Monday. When I collected her from school on Tuesday, we took a walk along a stream, towards the bus stop. She said, 'Mummy, I just love everything about the world'. I asked her to explain this in a bit more detail. She went on to say that she loved animals, plants, mountains, rivers and so on. In fact, she said she loves the universe, stars, planets, etc (everything nature has to offer). I knew this about her anyway, but it was lovely to hear her verbalise her emotions in such a beautiful way. I was just about crying. I think she's going to be an ecologist. We always find the best days are when we've been in country parks, with animals or just walking.

Here's a link to a great website which has loads of ideas to keep your kids occupied, when you're out in the countryside: www.naturedetectives.org.uk. It's British, but the activities can be done anywhere in the world.

I'm with all of you. If I'm outside, I'm happy (I like the word blissful....)

So much so that I can't put it into words.
