How much do you know about the origins of Easter and Christmas?

A lot...I have a degree in classical archaeology. I tried to leave the opening post to a simple question to get others responses. :D

Proceed.

Good to know. Most of the time when someone asks such a question, they only know the Christian implications of the two holidays.

This.

They're better known by their true (Pagan) names of Ishtar and Yule.

I don't celebrate them. Not because I'm an atheist, but because I'm a Christian.

all_white, there are a few names and differing theories about what holidays Easter and Christmas took over.

I'm not an atheist but I'm close enough.

I don't celebrate such holidays. But I do cherish the opportunity to have some days off when such holidays arrive.

Easter is a festival to worship the god known as Cadbury's-Creme-Egg. Whereas Christmas is about the god known as Tube-of-JellyTots. I believe! I believe! Om nom nom. :hail: :hail: :hail:

Easter is rather stupid and useless of a holiday.

Regarding Christmas, that's a better question to ask anti-consumerists rather than atheists. Because Christmas is a holiday dedicated to consumerism, not Christianity.

Yup

I celebrate Easter cause I like pastel colors and bunnies,
and Christmas cause I like food and Bing Crosby and whimsically-decorated trees.

I also say "god damn" and "jesus christ".

I celebrate Christmas, simply because I get lots of free food :D I don't care if it is based on the imaginary birth of God's Son/God, St. Patricks day is founded on BS too.

An atheist should not observe them for their true form as that would say the observe Pagan holidays...which is a religion.

I'll do whatever I damn well please, including using stolen and bastardized religious holidays as an excuse to indulge in a few things I enjoy.

Doesn't mean I believe in sky monsters.
