I read the unabridged version. I seemed to me that at the beginning of the novel, Heinlein was modeling the traits of the "man from Mars" on someone with some form of ASD. For example, he would "shut down" in response to certain situations. He was certainly isolated at first and hesitant to communicate with others.

I enjoyed it, but it had its flaws. Heinlein's take on religion was interesting, but confusing. At first I thought he was going to completely satirize religious belief, but then seemed to pull his punches (about the followers of Foster.) He then presents his own version of mysticism. Did anyone come away with a different take on this?
