i cannot think with these smilies and other things blinking and moving.

I don't know what browser you use, but with Firefox you can go to Tools > Options > Content and disable 'load images automatically'. This prevents the emoticons (as well as all other images) from loading and instead just displays the descriptive words. You could also try the Adblock Plus extension and block the image by right clicking the image and blocking the source. It might disable all images from WP as well (not sure, never tried it) but it would mean that you wouldn't prevent images in other sites from loading. Hope this helps

I seem to remember one member making an app that created cyber stickies you could move on your screen to cover the sensory-upsetting ads. Obviously the site owner uses the ads to fund the site, but since its a service he has no control over the content, and many of the ads are really physically upsetting to someone with AS. ANYWAY, if you search this board you might be able to find the app. Otherwise, Firefox with ad blocker is popular.

i've already got ad blocker, i just hate using it to block out icons as i have to unblock them many times to get a forum to function properly.

just hit escape.
that shuts them up.

How comes some of the little icons next to the thread titles wiggle and flash and some don't??

I know this isn't the same blinking the thread was talking about but it seemed a stupid Q to make a new one over....

i have never found a "legend" that explains what they mean. they look like bells to me. some are ringing (due to animation), and some are seemingly dead (static (not moving)). i do not know what the significance of the animated icons represents.


it is like they are ringing to invite my attention for some reason, but i do not pay attention to "hot topics" any more so than i do to niche topics, zero = zero i guess.

when i become overwhelmed by all the laughing smileys that are jiggling in my vision, i press "escape" and they are all instantly apprehended from further movement.

i did not see a thread about blinking, but i blink normally.

I thought maybe they indicated threads that other users were reading? as I know another forum which tells you when someone is reading or replying to topics using flashing names

they indicate "hot" topics... meaning topics that are frequently visited etc. by the users.

it starts when the topic passes a certain threshold.

how do you know this?

I seem to remember the key being on this site, but can't find it now. Maybe it got removed to shave a fraction of a second off the load time and stress on the server?

That's a great tip, It would be good, I think, if it was explained in a permanent sticky thread. The rolling of the eyes on the smiley face distracts me when I am writing a post; there is one person here that uses that rolling eyes smiley face to excess, and I can't help but to think of them everytime I post, and see the rolling of the eyes.

Also, not too long ago there was a thread complaining about animated avatars; I see the escape button stops that too.

One thing to be careful though, when you hit escape to get rid of the smiley face animations, do it before you start writing a post because that action will also erase everything you are actively writing in a post. It happened when I hit escape about half way through this post; the first time I attempted it.
