Lately I've been looking into seeing a therapist to improve my social skills and small talk. While the thought of doing this motivates me, I've come across a not-so-small problem: where to go.

I'm an introverted, socially awkward (or so I think) young adult with minor social anxiety but no diagnoses. I suspect that I could be diagnosed with a personality disorder--probably either Schizoid or Avoidant--and feel there's an outside chance I could receive an AS diagnosis.

But I'm not particularly interested in a diagnosis, unless I become convinced that it could help others relate to and understand me more easily in social settings and at work. Rather, I'd prefer to address these issues by working on my practical social skills (relationship- and occupation-related) with a therapist.

I read Michelle Winner's "Social Thinking-Social Communication Profile" and identified strongly with her system and several of the categories she proposes. Perhaps I would start by seeing someone familiar with her work. To cut to the chase, I'm curious whether anyone has any suggestions/recommendations regarding social skills therapists (preferably in the southeast US). I have almost nothing nailed down yet, so I would really appreciate any tips.

Thanks in advance.
