What is the longest you've ever gone without the Common Cold? I know people who seem to get them once a month, others seasonally, and others maybe once a year.

Until April 2010, i used to average 3-4 per year. I work with the public, who often dont have a clue about covering their mouths when they cough or sneeze, and i feel the droplets hitting me in the face. I dont have access to hand sanitizer, nor do i have time to wash my hands more than once or twice in an 8 hour shift.

I still work with the unwashed, unhygenic masses, in a convenience store. I (knocking on wood) have not had influenza since 2006 and before that it was 1993(yes i keep track), and have not had a cold since April 2010. I KNOW i have been exposed many times, by customers and family members, yet ive been blessed this year.

What say you?

Monthly, Quarterly, Yearly.....?

I've gone for 2 years without a cold, when I first got my dog.

I think I've gone about ten months - just getting over one now, no idea where I picked it up from, but it's been stubborn as it's been over a week now and still a bit sniffly. I do suffer terribly when I have a cold :(

When I was a smoker (9+ months ago) I had them a lot more often, maybe once every four or five moths, they also lasted longer, and of course they were far more harmful/dangerous to have as it meant instant chest infection. Although part of what made them so common for me, along with the smoking, was working in an office...sick people, evil air conditioning, and poor hygiene in work areas.

I don't get why the governments don't do more to protect against colds; advice on prevention, encourage wearing masks, make it mandatory for more work places to have hand sanitizer in work as you do in hospitals, routine checking for bacteria levels in work areas to ensure cleaners are doing their jobs, etc....after all colds cost the economy, and the health services.

Usually twice a year at least. Once in November or December, and again in February or March. This year has really sucked though. It's been at least 5 or 6 times.

Because here in america, the health plan for the working poor can be summed up in one sentence "Dont get sick, seriously, dont get sick"

I'm currently experiencing my record with out a cold! I've pretty much gone 5 years with out catching the flu. Had a slight cold about a year ago, but compared to what I used to experience, it is hard to count that one. What I did was begin supplementing with D3. I raise my testing levels to between 60 to 70ng/ml. From what I've read, and now experienced, the sunshine vitamin has been found to help fight against infections.

"Higher vitamin D level linked with reduced risk of infection"

http://www.drbriffa.com/2010/06/28/high ... infection/

From the article:

Quote:
In previous posts (here and here) I have highlighted the benefits vitamin D has with regard to improving the immune response and helping keep infections such as flu at bay. It has been mooted that the upsurge in viral infections during the winter is connected with the generally lower vitamin D levels at this time. The traditional view is that winter infections are due to ‘indoor crowding’. However, it turns out that flu epidemics do not occur in the summer in crowded workplaces, for instance, despite the presence of the flu virus around people who should, technically speaking, be susceptible to infection [1,2].

These facts were plucked from a recently published study which looked at the relationship between vitamin D levels and risk of viral respiratory tract infection such as cold and flu [3]. This study assessed blood levels of vitamin D and viral infection in almost 200 American men and women throughout last autumn (fall) and winter.

Some interesting findings from this study were:

I honestly do not keep a track, but I would say I usually get a cold about once a year, but really mild, I even continue going to work. My daughter is like me (I think she is stronger than me). She almost never gets sick (less than once a year - as I am not concern about that I REALLY do not keep track), and when she does it's really mild.

Be it known that i take no supplements, vit C, echinacia(sp) or any of that.

I think ive been blessed with a strong immune system and good metabolism. I hardly eat vegetables, i dont drink milk, i eat fast food 5 times a week, i skip lunch when im working (dont have time) so i eat a candy bar or two. I drink a liter of soda everyday. I pretty well abuse my body, but i get plenty of excercise.

^^^All this and im 6'1" and about 190. Im still in the "healthy" range for BMI, my blood pressure is good, cholesterol is good, no diabetes in my family. I make my mother jealous.

Four years ago, i quit McDonalds for good, i still eat subway, burger king, pizza hut and all that, but simply giving up McD's i dropped from 235 to 190 and stayed there since. I can still put away a medium pan pizza with pepperoni, bacon, ground beef and onion in one sitting, but i dont seem to gain anything from it.

I haven't had any illnesses that I can recall that affect my respiratory system (including a cold) since I quit smoking in October 2005. I have, however, been plagued with stomach problems and variations of the flu which lead to ear infections and throat problems.

here begins a rather gross twist to this thread, im sure we can carry on a frank, but complete conversation here
that was going to be my next post. I am somewhat of an emetophobe (google it), im lucky in that, i have not vomited since June 2003, i have not eaten carrots or ranch dressing since.

as for diarrheal issues, i think i have mild IBS-A. the reason i quit mcdonalds was that it was putting me on the fast track to the john. i actually carried two imodium in my wallet for a year "just in case".

I do have a few trigger foods, especially corn and corn products (taco chips, etc.) but oddly enough, i can handle corn syrup just fine. I discovered this after ruling out whole kernel corn, then having a bad reaction when i got hard shell tacos at taco bell, but not with soft tacos which are made with flour tortillas.

every so often, probably every other month or so, i have an attack, i will be "non-productive" for 2-3 days then get wind that i swear only satan could create, then there will be a one time session where every level of the Bristol stool scale is accounted for. after that, its like nothing ever happened. I cant pin it down to one food in particular, but garlic will get me every time, which sucks because i love the flavor.

It was maybe two or three years that I last had symptoms of a cold, and those were pretty mild. A week before Easter, however, I got sick with bad cold or flu-like symptoms. First I couldn't stop coughing and my mouth watered a lot, then I got a really bad sore throat, a fever and chills and the usual runny nose. Then I was sweating like a beast, and once when I was alone at night I felt so emotionally miserable I started bawling and of course that made everything worse. You can only do so much to prevent getting sick and yet when you do people these days act like it's all your fault and you should be blamed and not pitied. :( At least my parents didn't feel that way, they brought me over some ice pops and medicine. :)

I believe I went 3 years recently without catching a cold. I'm not really exposed to germs that much because I am not around too many people too often. I wash my hands often.

I got one about every year when I was in school but I haven't got them much as an adult. I had one recently because my girlfriend had it & I think my immune system was weaker to it because I moved across the country a few months before. It hit me very hard & fast but I got over it fast even faster than my girlfriend. I may of gone 5 years or more without one before that unless I had very minor 1s. What I'm alot more prone to is sinus infections. I'm in a better environment now & am on 2 sinus meds so I'm hoping I won't get another for along time

Ever since Middle I've hardly ever gotten sick with anything, even colds. I'm really healthy and have good hygiene.

It's allergies that's been my main problem, considering I'm allergic to the tree right outside my bedroom window; although I recently got a new nasal spray that works wonders.

I read about a Doctor whos patients were the only ones in a psychiatric hospital to not get the flu, the reason he gave was that he administered Vitamin D, so I take a Vitamin D tablet every day for a few years now, and even though I have to work with a man who has always got a new cold his kids pick up from school, I just dont catch them anymore.

I told such to one of the Peeresses in the House of Lords who was suffering from colds, so she started taken Vitamin D and reported to me that she no longer gets them.
