Without taking either side, either the conservative or liberal side, it always seems to me that conservatives are hated or attract more disrespect than liberals. Why is this, when they are ultimately just two ends of the political spectrum? Maybe because conservatives are accused of less progressiveness (interpreted as backwardness) or conservatism gets associated in some people's minds with fascism or other reason? If indeed you think conservatives are actually hated more?

Because there is this ridiculous stereotype that all conservatives are bible bashing imbeciles. Morons like Bill O'Reilly only further this stereotype.

Note: I am not conservative. There are more sides than just 'liberal' and 'conservative', by the way.

Depends what you mean by liberal and conservative.

There is (that I can think of)

Liberalism:

Libertarianism
Classical liberalism
Social liberalism
Neoliberalism
Conservative liberalism
National liberalism

Types of conservatism (at least in the UK include):

National conservatism
Social conservatism
Liberal conservatism (not the same as conservative liberalism)
Libertarian conservatism
Traditional conservatism
Neoconservatism

A lot of these are very interrelated to each other anyway, and can mix and match.

I might agree with traditional conservatives on some things, and disagree with them on others. I might feel attached to classical liberalism and libertarianism but dislike the more extreme ends. I might be very close to conservative liberalism and liberal conservatism (very, very similar, these two) or I might mix some national conservatism with my classical liberalism.

It's difficult to tell.

The point to make is that often people who style themselves liberals (in one form or another) are often much closer to some conservatives in many ways, and vice versa. Conservatism and liberalism go together I think.

"Liberalism" in most people's thinking means social democracy, which is not the same thing.

It's because people assume that they are all Bible-thumpers who think homosexuals, racial minorities, and non-Christians are evil, and that women should be "kept in their place". They are also blamed for destroying the economy, and using the war on terror as a guise for committing mass genocide against Muslims.

In reality, only a tiny fraction of them are like that.

Closet conservative topic

The real question is why is "liberal" so often used as a pejorative?

Because liberal has taken on a completely different meaning from its original one.

Conservatives will not shed a tear for the stupid or lazy folk of the world. They won't sing Kumbaya with the down trodden and that is why they are hated.

Do you know the story of the grasshopper and the ants? it has two endings, a liberal ending and a conservative ending. In the liberal ending the ants end up feeding the grasshopper through the winter, proving to the grasshopper that he was right all the time -- he did not have to work or save and the world owes him a living. In the conservative ending to the story the grasshopper starves to death or freeze to death and it serves him right for being stupid and lazy.

Actually, insects hibernate through the winter.

I think of conservatism as the ideology of restriction, bound by tradition, dogma, and authority. Conservatives wish to impose their religion and sexual mores on you. Conservatives also tend to take an austere, selfish approach to resources. Notice how ruveyn exhibits the conservative/libertarian "I've got mine" attitude, assuming anyone who would collect disability or welfare is lazy and stupid.

Because we conservatives are subhuman, ya hear? Anyone whose uh con-serva-tive is de-serva-tive of hate just for its own sake..... right? Oh, and certainly if you can imagine a conservative saying something you don't want to hear, then they've thereby committed a capital crime. If you actually hear words that you don't like, then it's time for genocide!! ! If anyone suggests anything which is in opposition to what you want to have done, then it calls for intergalactic war!! !! !! !!

The spirit of the times is in hate with Judeo-Christiandom and capitalism, conservatism often stands for both.

over react much?

i dont know much of the conservative landscape in the us,
in denmark the conservative parties are sometimes more socialist than the liberals.

it does however seem that the very idea of "conservatism" opposes progress, the world is moving and a society needs to do the same.

I think the more prominent conservatives display pride in their ignorance, massive hypocrisy, and unpleasantness. Prominent liberals only display ignorance and unpleasantness.
