Very rock oriented I know, but this list is subject to change.

Pre-1950s - There are a bunch of classical works I enjoy. My favorite would probably be Mars, the Bringer of War from Holst's Planets Suite, although Khachaturian's Sabre Dance is an honorable mention.
1950s - "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash (Honorable mention: "What'd I Say" by Ray Charles)
1960s - "21st Century Schizoid Man" by King Crimson (Honorable mention: Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along The Watchtower")
1970s - "Welcome To The Machine" by Pink Floyd (Honorable mention: "Toccata" by ELP)
1980s - "Bullet The Blue Sky" by U2 (Honorable mention: "Never Let Me Down Again" by Depeche Mode)
1990s - "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails (Honorable mention: "Army Of Me" by Bjork)
2000s - "Russia On Ice" by Porcupine Tree (Honorable mention: "Eria Tarka" by the Mars Volta)
2010s (so far) - "Summer Night Horizon" by Anathema (Honorable mention: "Tighten Up" by the Black Keys)

The more recent stuff was more difficult.

If I did this list tomorrow it would probably be completely different. It's so hard to choose just one song from thousands.
