I distinctly remember my first week in reception class (I think this is like kindergarten in the USA, I was about four) in which a lady tried to help me to learn to read, but I wouldn't comply with her because I could already read well. The class teacher said "no, she has to learn with the other children" when the lady told her that I could already read, and so I stood on a table and read out every single poster in the class. I'm not sure what age I was when I learned to read, but I could definitely read books aged 3 and probably earlier. My grandmother thinks she can remember me reading before my third birthday. I wondered if anyone else was an early reader and whether it's related to AS/autism?

I remember reading "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" by myself when I was about 4 years old before I even entered Kindergarten, but I don't remember how I learned to read or at what age I began to read.

At 2, maybe 2 and a half, my mother caught me reading "Marvin K Mooney will you please go now" (Dr. Seuss) in the bathroom. As with one of the posters above, school teachers had serious issue with me reading ahead of the group. Correct that - one school teacher: Mrs Horner. And I had the pleasure (example of sarcasm!) of being her student all the way up to grade 3.

I read a Dr. Seuss book before I went to school on my first Day, I was 4(ish) I think is was Green eggs and Ham. I bought for my daughter "Oh, the Places You'll Go". when she was 2, but she didn't like to read it. She liked the Kipper the dog books

My sister used to tell me that she taught me to read before I was in preschool, although I can't be too sure that's the truth, and I have no recollection of it, but it's possible.

Reading this blog I have learned a lot of Aspies are early readers. A lot of people here started reading by themselves before going to school. I think 3-4 years old is the average age. I do not know it is related to AS, because not all Aspies are early readers. For example, my Aspie husband started reading by himself at 4 years old, but our Aspie daughter learned to read at school at 6. She loves reading, but she did not learn by herself, and I started reading to her (children books) on a daily basis very early.

I was about 6 I guess, they actually thought about holding me back since the thought I was such a poor reader in 1st grade. Flipped the switch and was probably the best reader in class the next year.

Had to of been 5. I remember it was some story book about where the sun came from. Then I started on some book on human anatomy once I mastered the previous one. Then it was astromony, dinosaurs, Harry Potter, the Bible a little, and folk tales.

I think I was 2-3 years old.
I only know I was an early reader and an early talker also.

My parents inform me that I could read at about 12-18 months of age, before I could talk. They could ask me which audio tape to fetch out of the drawer and I always fetched the right one, even when they shuffled them, so I must have been reading the labels. Apparently I also registered some kind of noise of protest when my mother read me my favourite book (the same one every night) and she skipped a word, though that could have been aural memory I suppose. When I was 2 I would lay on the floor reading the junior encyclopedias that were conveniently placed at floor level, though I have no idea if I was comprehending what was in them. I can't remember ever not being able to read or learning to read.

Supposedly, when I was 2. Though I didn't talk until I was 3. And all of these "facts" are just hearsay!

I was 3yrs. Then, my Mum was advised by a health visitor to find a school to keep me occupied and she found a small private school nearby. So, I started school (not nursery) at 3yrs.

My 5yr old daughter is much closer to average than I was. She loves books and being read to and she's one of the better readers in her class, but not exceptional.
