Fashion - I don't get it.
To those with ASD: do you care about fashion so obsessively as many teenage girls do? What do you wear?
I usually wear army trousers (I find them more comfortable than other trousers and I can't stand jeans), baggy t-shirts, army boots (they're good for walking and I like walking long distances) and if its cold I'll wear a sweatshirt of some sort. I like my clothes to be baggy because I don't like to feel my clothes against my skin too much.
But why do so many teenage girls do things like spend an hour dressing up and applying make-up before seeing friends? In fact why bother with the make-up at all?
Also, why did I get bullied for not conforming to fashion? Why should people have to conform?

I view fashion as a checklist. Am I wearing a shirt? Check. Pants? Check. Shoes and socks? Check. I'm ready for the day. As an amusing way to illustrate this I once wore a striped polo shirt and camouflage shorts. When I got to work the admin for the office asked if I had any mirrors in my house. It never occurred to me that those two things wouldn't go together.

I'm a bit of a punk so I like shirts that have lots of colour on them! Otherwise I just wear plain clothes. As long as it is comfortable I don't mind. I think fashion is stupid, especially when a girl picked on me at school because my trousers (which otherwise were identical to hers) didn't have a designer label on!

I absolutely love fashion--it's one of the ways that I express myself; I usually dress differently than other girls my age. I consider myself quite fashionable
I even have a blog dedicated (below) to my clothes and the things that I do.
I didn't care for makeup until I was nineteen, now I absolutely love it! I keep it "simple" though. Foundation, concealer, bronzer to emphasize my cheekbones, I fill in my eyebrows since they're sparse in some area, and some blush! Sometimes mascara, but taking it off is a pain in the ass. If I want to look extra good, I do a cat eye look like the one Anna Karina often wore.
I think it takes me 45 minutes to get ready all together. I spend like 10-15 minutes in the shower staring at the wall though since I like the way the water feels (hehe). Then I have to fix my hair... I have extremely curly hair so I have to do something to it, or else it'll start to dread. That takes me about 10 minutes, etc. I think my makeup takes me 5-10 mins?
I figured, if I think I look well dressed, then I'll feel good about myself and not feel self-conscious, which is true. I no longer feel awkward when I'm out because at least I know I look cute.
So to answer your question OP, most girls do it because it makes them feel good about themselves. I know I look perfectly fine without makeup--but I just love having it on. Most people do not think I'm wearing any
I actually have a fashion folder on my computer. I think my favorite fashion blogger is Karlascloset; such a well dressed woman with class! Karla's Closet
Look up "fashion" in a dictionary and you get this:
That says it all. You're just jumping on a bandwagon and wearing what other people consider cool. If you wear something or act a certain way because you're just being yourself, it's not fashion.
Well as I didn't grow up in this culture I don't get it either. I imagine it has something to do with fitting in with your peers. As for me I do care about how I dress. I'm a strongly visual person, so colors and styles (formality) should match at least a little bit, and the upper and lower body should be balanced. I do not follow fashion trends, just what I consider nice looking. Sometimes I can go through my closet putting matching outfits together as well, by what I consider neat, nice and classic. None of my outfits should be uncomfortable, of course. Right now I generally wear silk skirts, cotton or rayon fitted t-shirts or tops that match the color and weight of the skirts, matching earrings, bangles and sandals, sometimes a jersey dress. I do think I look pulled together but not trendy, and all my stuff are quite comfortable. You'll not be able to pay me to get into tight, scratchy, unflattering clothes no matter how trendy they are.

I think plenty of people with AS are into fashion but don't follow trends. Anyone who has a look that they enjoy, even if it's counter-culture or subculture and anti-fashion - that's still fashion. I always think people are making a mistake when they say 'I hate fashion' or 'I don't care about fashion' when really everyone has their own opinion on clothes and what they like and don't like. And I used to do the same until I realised that having an opinion against popular fashion was still an interest in the subject. I think it's more logical to say 'I don't follow trends' or 'I hate (I'm picking a random subculture here just for example) goth fashion'.
I'm definitely interested in fashion, and yes it is an obsession of mine, but not in the way you describe. I love studying fashion history and learning about all the social and economic reasons behind why people dressed the way they did at the time, and researching designers and their influences and street fashion. I like to wear what I like, but what I'm comfortable in, so I don't wear make up or high heels and I have quite a few sensory problems with materials so I mostly wear cotton. I'm obsessed with fashion in an aspie information absorbing way as opposed to a socially conscious NT way I think ![]()

This is very like me too. The only difference is in what I would choose to wear (no skirts unless it's winter, with thick tights and boots). On a normal day, I'll wear jeans, long sleeved t-shirt and walking shoes - comfortable, practical, co-ordinated and never unflattering. I've never worn the height of fashion, but never had old-fashioned looking clothes either. My 5yr old daughter put her thoughts on the matter into a few simple words, 'Life isn't about looking good, life is about living'.

I like to wear what I feel comfortable in and what looks good in my opinion. Mostly black with a red, gray or white shirt once in a while, or blue jeans. My typical summer outfit consists of either a T- shirt with denim shorts, knee high socks and sneakers, a T-shirt or tank top with a loose knee or floor length black velvet skirt and my knee high socks with black ballet flat style shoes, or a T-shirt/ tank top with black pants and a few accessories and my jewelry. I feel like my neck is naked unless I'm wearing a pretty necklace to fidget with. Once in a great while I will wear my high heeled boots to a party or a bar but I end up regretting that after my feet start hurting like hell. I don't follow trends. During cold weather I love comfy black sweaters and hoodies, and long coats. I won't wear anything made from itchy material like wool, or something with a tight collar around my neck. So, besides the rare times that I wear my high heeled boots, I like to mix personal style and comfort.I like to wear what I feel comfortable in and what looks good in my opinion. I went from having absolutely no sense of fashion, not knowing what to wear with what, being unable to get a sense of how others see me, later don't caring for it, to having a sort of punkish taste in clothing (and furnishing), getting a better sense of what to wear with what and how others see me, but still being far from the level of others around me. For example, I still have my shirts tucked in the trousers/jeans, not out, like it's supposed to be, 'cause I don't feel comfortable when it's out and the jeans is directly against my skin.
For work I wear a modest golf-shirt or something similar with jeans and sporty-style shoes. Fortunately I work at a creative company where it's allowed. On my days off I wear a soft t-shirt and a soft shorts, probably made of cotton. For cycling I must wear synthetic stretch clothing because of sweating issues. Other types of clothing just can't handle that. At home I prefer to wear nothing, if possible...
