I've been waiting for CentOS 6 to come out (which it finally did) so that I can upgrade my server and deploy a Diaspora "pod" (think Apache or WordPress installation) for my friends. (I need a newer version of Ruby than I can build on CentOS 5.) I was reading a rant in the Haven about Facebook and it struck me that Diaspora might be a useful service for WrongPlanet to offer its members.

facebook has just modified its privacy policy just a few days ago though :P seriously, I wish all the best to the guys from Diaspora but I don't know what they'd have to do in order to bring poeple over there from facebook... even Google+ is no match for facebook (and I freaking *love* Google) ...

I haven't had a chance to actually play with Diaspora but my impression from reading the IRC channel is that it interoperates with Facebook, copying FB threads to your personal Diaspora feed and copying your Diaspora posts (that you authorize) to your FB feed.

Ease of use requires lack of privacy. Once you demand privacy, you have to add complicated controls to specify what you mean by privacy. No two people have the same privacy requirements.

Nice blog entry on what Diaspora is, why you want it, where it's at in development, and what we can expect of it in the future.
