Happy National Coming Out Day.

If you have decided to come out today, Congratulations!

If you are thinking about coming out, good for you!

If you aren't ready to come out yet, don't worry, you don't have to wait until next year, but you can wait as long as you need to.

If you are already out, do us all a favour and tidy up your closet!

This was the year I finally said, "f**k it. I'm going to get over my shyness and come out to the masses." I made a coming-out bulletin on Youtube, and I made a coming-out status update on Facebook (though I only made my status viewable by my non-related friends). Some friends who otherwise never acknowledged my status updates "liked" it, and I received support from some friends I otherwise wouldn't suspect so much support from. One thing I found interesting, though, is that only women "liked" and commented on my status. Not a single one of my male friends acknowledged it.

It is my experience that males are less comfortable with gay men and women are less comfortable with lesbians.

Anyway, I wish I had the nerve to do that. I've told one of my closest friends and mean to get around to telling some others but we're at different universities and I haven't Skyped them in a while. Most of my family doesn't know. And my grandparents aren't going to know until I can't hide it from them anymore (ie: if I ever have a boyfriend who visits or lives in my home town).

Descartes, to bastardize your namesake:

existi ergo es.

(You have come out, therefore you are.)

Congratulations

Well, I do have some male friends on Facebook who are quite supportive of gay rights. I imagine none of them acknowledged my status either because they didn't care enough to do so or they didn't even see it in the first place.

Thanks! I really am glad I did this. I consider it an important milestone in my life.

I came out as trans (considering gender reassignment) to my younger sister. She was really supportive, and basically said I have spent way too many years depressed and it's time that I get happy.

One person down...too many to go...
