The past few years have been a terrible time for me and the young folk I see and meet in my home town. I'm an Aspie with OCD, and I've attempted suicide, been forced out of work and on a pension, and have been in constant conflict with myself and my family.

And yet, I see kids in my community that are becoming gravely ill with chronic conditions, which are worse than what I'll ever be. Depression, Cancer, Crone's Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, both Anorexia Nervosa and weight loss not due to any mental condition, Cushing's Syndrome, Severe Learning Delay, Muscular Dystrophy...

Could my generation (Gen Y) just be the sickest generation of unfortunates in modern times?

Generation Y is more easily diagnosed that previous generations, due to more extensive health care ... they also seem to whine and complain more than any other generation about every little ache and pain ...

^ Yeah, I agree with the fact that these things are more well-known and easily diagnosed, and therefore it may seem like more people have them. Depending on the illness, it really may be that more people have it, though. I know Polio isn't on your list, but that was certainly a huge problem for people (esp. the young) 60+ years ago. Also, I don't think calling the generation "gravely ill" is all that accurate.

... but do they do that only because they are now more-easily "diagnosed" or because there is now more of anything to even be diagnosed?

I believe society creates/causes its own ills so it can then attempt to console/admire itself.

If there's an epidemic going on,
it's of dietary-related diseases.

Nothing describes the Western diet more than "fat, sugar, and salt",
and it's killed millions to date and will likely kill millions more before something comprehensive is done.

I think also that a lot of people get to live fuller lives with conditions that used to limit them. That and maybe it is socially acceptable to admit you have something when you used to hide it.

I was talking with someone the other day about how kids mature physically at a much more rapid rate than they used to, even 10-15 years ago. It is like the world everyone gets an extra dose of growth hormone to hurry things up a few years.
