Is it just me, or is Wrong Planet really slow these days?

It does seem slow to me. At least compared to how it was in '09.

in another post, alex said something about how if you have a "slow computer," the presense of flash ads could be part of the slowdown. with me, my mouse cursor disappears whenever i am on a WP page, then reappears when i switch to another web page. compared with the numerous fancy pants here who have the latest greatest hardware, my celeron with <2 gb slow RAM would qualify as a "slow computer."

Hm.. I may have misunderstood the OP but I had thought it was referring to the frequency of new posts, not the physical loading time on the computer.

I do remember that in '09 it was slow as heck, though, and frequently down due to volume. Which applies to both meanings of the OP, actually. Either the server has been improved or the amount of activity is reduced.
