The number of WP members used to be displayed on every WP page.
(last time I checked, it was about 58,000).
For the last few days, that number disappeared.
Is it gone forever?
Will we no longer know how many members WP has?

Oh I just noticed!

Nor does it show the visitors or members currently online.

This was intentionally removed.

It might come back at a later time, but I make no guarantees.

A more useful statistic would be "active members", since once you are a member, you are always a member, so it is impossible for that number to decrease and it doesn't mean a lot.

How would one define an "active member"?

Maybe someone that has posted in the last 4 months (or some other arbitrary timeframe). The reason is that there are most likely a lot of users that haven't posted in years.

The counter was removed because it was by far the longest running database query on the site (by a ridiculously wide margin).

Complicating the query it has to run would only make things worse.

I'm the owner of the company that hosts WP, thus I'm the admin of the server, not the admin of the site.

Can you make a script that would check WP's number of members once a month, and would display it for us like it used to?
(the displayed number would remain visible and constant for the duration of each month).

Assuming WP is hosted on a Linux server, you can use "cron" to run that script once a month.

I can, but that's not really my responsibility. As I said before, it's entirely possible that the counter will come back in one form or another. That's Alex's call, not mine.

The numbers were removed mainly as a test to see how that would impact page loads, server load, etc. It wasn't by any means a permanent decision.

Its actually really easy to find out total number of members.

Go to Members List

At the bottom right hand corner where it shows page numbers, click on the last one. There you have it. It is currently 58648 members.

Now it is 61870.

2400 in a month. 80 per day, one every 20 minutes? There must be some mistake.
