I'll join too. I ride on busses everyday. Ok, they are yellow but....

And I don't think you have to stay pure, just faithfull to the Routemaster - our great master.

Did not read all this thread kinda out raged someone would make a man made object
a church :) Like garlic came from the creator Garlic own garlic juice 3 billion years ago.
Thats a real church.

I will commend your false church on promoting public transportaion and fuel savings. If
we had more Routemaster's we could solve the worlds oil shortage.

I would consider joining the Church of Routmasters only in NHRA makes them a pro class.

I can see it now!!

"next in the staging lanes is the Blown Nitro Routemaster class. It's the only class in NHRA that not only allows, but mandates 40 passengers be on board."

Do you think we could find enough busses to fill a 16 car field??

Let's see, if we say that buses can be anywhere from 2-5 cars in size. ((I'm hopeless at maths)) then:

16 16 16 16
8 5 4 3

Now, buses where I am, run by one bus stop every 10/15 minutes.

If we assume it's 15 minutes then it will take:

from 45 mins to 120 minutes

Ummm... that's not quite what I meant.

You need a nuber of cars (or buses in this case) that's a square of 2 for Drag Racing.

Most pro classes are 16 cars. That gives you 8 pairings for round #1. Half the cars loose so you have 4 pairings for round 2. half those cars loose which gives you 2 pairings for the semi-finals. 2 cars loose leaving 2 cars to race for the final round.

You need either:
2 cars
4cars
8 cars
16 cars
32 cars
64 cars
or 128 cars to have even pairings.

I'm going up to the Bus in the Sky
That's where I'm gonna go, when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest,
I'm going up to the Bus that's the best.

 lol
Given the typical English power:weight ratio, adding a blower and nitrous will give about 65 HP TOTAL - lol.

Hey, CockneyRebel, they offer hiring services with London-style buses (when you say Routemaster, you mean the classic red double-decker bus?) on the Gold Coast here in Australia...

Cockney Rebel may know better, but doing some research:

Originally powered with a Leyland strait 6 deisel - 9.6 litres (590 cu) with 150 BHP @ 2000 rpm.
Later replaced with an AEC deisel 11.6 litres.
Some were fitted with Cummins deisels.

Hmm spray water into the exhaults to act as a super intercooler.

Use propane injection.

Hmm maybe thats not allowed in bus racing.

Use diethyl ether (very high cetane number) add water (it mixes with water)
add a soap to act as emusifer and a small amout of lubricate oil.

Reprogram or adjust the fuel air to inject a much greater volume of fuel. A diesel waste
alot of energy with extra air compression for cooling action. The water replaces the need
for this air. But its still there so extra fuel is injected to get a much more powerfull
explosion.

Actually what I found was that they were all I-6 diesels.

The Leyland 9.6 came in 2 basice versions. 95hp and 115hp

The AEC 11.6 came in a 150hp and 175 hp version

The Cummins motor was a recent retrofit of a handfull of restored busses.

The gearbox is always some sort of manual 4 speed.

Aside from adding sequetial turbo-chargers, there's probably not much that can be done with the original engines. :?

Maybe the site I found confused the Leyland with the AEC. I'm sure it referred to the Leyland and it said 150 - same as the AEC you found so I expect you are correct.

What is a I-6 ? - Straight 6? ie not V or horizotally opposed?

Leyland made cars in Australia for a while and I think was owned by Chrysler/Dodge and (?) some relationship with IH. Maybe you could fit a Dodge motor with a few more horses in a Routemaster, but I think Cockney Rebel may think that's sacrilege.
