Grettings,
I am a woman in Minnesota, USA.
My son was diagnosed with Asperger's a couple of years ago. He is 8. I am 37.
The 'best' part about this journey has been figuring out that I believe I am an Aspie too.
Reading about it for my son I saw myself in every description. Reading "Thinking in Pictures" made my design skills make sense.

My whole life I knew I was different and stuff. Always struggled with depression.
Nearly committed suicide at 18 when I first tried Uni.
Eventually got an associates in Cabinetmaking and a certificates in Accounting...14 yrs later.
I am an amatuer DJ (yes I play vinyl) and low power radio enthusiast.

Currently unemployed. Laid off from an accounting technician job.. Focusing on my son and his education. After two public school debacles we finally found a private "unschool" that is working for him. Well, after putting him on Tenex (Guanfacine) to level him out.

And for the first time ever, I really think I am in love. Goin on 9 months, my boyfriend is moving in soon.

When I was younger and striving to fit in I found a web place called "Sanctuary" where people with DID or (multiple personality disorder) hung out. I think I always felt like I had multiple personalities, trying to be what people expected me to be.
I think I finally found the right Sanctuary for me.
Nice to meet you,
mg

thank you.

I wanted to add that I think to a large extent hugs are what Aspies need....warm, consenting, hugs with lots of squeeze in them.

We are all human squeeze machines.

Hello!
I live in the midwest, too....in illinois. my 10 year old son has autism; I am super sure that I'm an aspie, and I didn't come to that realization until last year. I totally fumbled through my 20's but the 30's look promising.
So, welcome and have fun!

hello! i've seen you elsewhere on the forum and i am happy that you are already contributing.

your realisation was similar to mine. a few years ago i was reading a science magazine and i saw the diagnostic criteria for Asperger's Syndrome. i read it aloud to my husband at the time as i was convinced that my nephew has AS. i read, "who does that sound like?" and he answered, "YOU."

i was shocked. but i did more research and it made sense. i had even gone to therapy prior to that in the hopes of learning better social skills, so i knew there were problems but i didn't know there could be a real reason. i have an official diagnosis (not everyone seems to need that), which helped to quiet the naysayers and made me more confident in myself.

Thanks for the welcome folks! :)

Wow, reading this site has been intense.

And I took the inventories:

Your Aspie score: 167 of 200
Your neurotypical (non-autistic) score: 48 of 200
You are very likely an Aspie

AQ= 45

though anyone with a working knowledge of autism could pick the "right" answers for those tests. It's kinda funny that if you're aspie you likely can't or wouldn't dream of "lying" to skew the tests. hehe
