As the title suggests, I want to know how long my fellow aspies-- those who are still looking for work, anyway-- have been looking for a job. I guess technically, I've been truly looking since November, ever since I graduated with my MiST, and since then I've been focusing my search on library-related jobs only. Now, though, I've gotten frustrated enough that I'll settle for pretty much anything and everything. Even before I graduated, though, I've been unemployed since the middle of August.

I want to get a sense of how long job hunting can sometimes be, so I can get a sense of how much I should search until I start truly evaluating my career of choice and thinking of perhaps switching to something more viable.

Kev, I got my MLS in 1995 and currently am a director of a public library. I've never heard of a MiST degree. Is that some new variant of the MLS degree? The reason I'm asking is that you can certainly work in a library without an MLS; I'm the only person working here with such a degree. The problem is that it's difficult to impossible to advance far without the MLS or its equivalent.

Having said this, the American Library Association used to have a jobs directory--at least the last time I checked. Most states also have their own librarians' organization; here in Texas it is the Texas Library Association. I can't speak for all state library associations, but I got my current job through TLA's jobs listings. If you want to work in a library, that would be my recommendation.

Master of Information Studies Mist degree ?
I think this what you mean ?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University ... nformation
" In 1995, the MLS and MIS degrees were both replaced with the Master of Information Studies (MISt) degree, which had three areas of specialization: archival studies, information systems, and library and information science. The name of the degree was changed to Master of Information (MI) in 2009. " on that web site

I graduated in March, so I've been looking since then. I got to keep my campus job until early June, though. That means I've been unemployed for almost 7 months. Interviews are scarce for me, unfortunately.

I've been looking for a month. I've had three interviews. At the last one, they asked for my ID and social security card to make copies then they said they have to contact other applicants. I don't know what that means. I haven't gotten word back.

I got my MLIS this past summer, but I finished all the program work last November and was looking for work with a 'degree to be awarded on X' deal.

So I've been hunting for over a year now. For a while I only applied to library jobs. Then my marriage started to go down the tubes and I started applying for everything. Now my partner has left and I've lost my home and moved back into my mom's attic and I'm back to just applying for library jobs, because living with my mom isn't bad and she's okay with it. It's not as if there's any shortage of jobs to apply to. They just never call me back. I don't know why. I keep asking people in the field for help and all they can say is, "Your application stuff is great, it's just a tough market."

I had the same problem with the non-LIS jobs. The only one that called me wanted me to take, not the warehouse job I'd applied for, but a call center job. I tried, but I was going to start having meltdowns, so I had to quit.

I do volunteer work in a museum library. My field-mentor people all say I should do this until I have full-time LIS work, and then some if I can.

An allowance isn't gonna cut it anymore.
