Here's my bio I thought I posted to my blog, but it didn't show up:

I am a 28 year old male medical student who was diagnosed with Asperger's officially in November of 2011. This is my first entry here. I suppose I will provide a very brief history of my experience with Asperger's. I have always been quirky and it is has always been quickly noticed by my peers. I was notorious for talking too fast growing up and my parents frequently reminded me of this and told me at times I sounded like I was mumbling. As I grew up, I was always very energetic and hyperactive in class causing disruption. Many of my teachers thought I had ADHD and recommended I be evaluated for this, but my mom didn't want me on medication. I made good grades so they really couldn\'t make any demands regarding this.

Socially, I compensated for my awkwardness by being the class clown and garnering attention by getting people to laugh at me. No matter what social unit I was thrown into it took less than a week for everyone to know that I was \"weird\', but I was able to put an endearing tone to it so that I was not ostracized or bullied; if anything it helped make me quite popular with me peers in high school and going into college.

I really ran into problems when I started medical school. It was much different from anything else and demanded a high degree of focused attention which I found very hard to put forth, since, like many of those on the Autism spectrum, I always needed to explore little tangent interests I had. Medical school does not leave time for this and I struggled to keep my head above water. When I began the clinical part of medical school, I started on Psychiatry. I was already reeling from having my ego shot down the last two years while I struggled with the book work. To make a long story short I had two different episodes during my clinical rotations. One involved me going awol and spending the summer in Colorado which almost got me kicked out of school. The second involved me attempting suicide at the beginning of my final year.

I will go into more detail later about some of these things. As it is right now I was required by my school to undergo a full blown neuropsych evaluation this past November before being allowed to return to school after my suicide attempt. Both my psychiatrist and therapist have independently stated they thought I had Asperger's. As many may know, it is difficult to make the diagnosis of Asperger's on an adult. So it was at this evaluation in November where I got the official stamp of Asperger's along with the stamp of Bipolar II/Cyclothymia. So that is a short bio from childhood to now. I will probably elaborate on certain things in my past and on new events that develop in future posts, but that is it for now. I look forward to being part of this forum.

i practiced medicine for 9 years, but my asperger's made it impossible to navigate hospital politics and i lost my license. i suggest radiology or pathology, something where dealing with people is not 24/7 and will not be so draining. i was an internist.

whatever you decide, welcome to wrong planet!

Yea you are definitely right about the radiology/pathology route. Fortunately, I love pathology and all the stuff it entails from grossing specimens to spending hours at the microscope. I am applying right now for residency and I am certain I will match successfully if I am allowed to finish up school.

I can't imagine doing clinical medicine. It took every ounce of energy I had not to go crazy while I was doing my clinical rotations. I became very cynical and misanthropic.
