I can't stand american TV anymore. There's too many stupid reality shows, such as Jersey Shore, Meet the Kardashians, etc., and don't get me started about 'tru' Tv, or any of that kind of stuff. UGH!! There's NO sophistication! It's not that I can't enjoy simplistic things. I can. But it's such a waste to have shows that either depict a distorted version of reality, continuously feed stereotypes about gender(you can't say that these shows don't send a message...) or just feed our fascination with the obscene, the crass, and the unnecessary.

"Married?!" "...Married!!" "...Married...!?!?" "Yes...MARRIED!! SHEESH!! !" (LOL)

Why are you watching it then?

Aren't the 2 shows you named off of MTV? every single thing on that channel is just commercials... learned that in sociology.

Tru tv is just as dumb of stuff.

I was thinking the same thing.

Hear hear! I wholeheartedly agree with you.
I'm happy watching CSPAN if there's no good science documentary on and I've already watched all of my recorded Jon Stewarts and Colberts....then again, last year "politics" was one of my special interests. 8)

Reality TV is for the most part silly and sad. Pawn Stars is okay though.

Jon Stewarts and Colberts - yup. Gotta love those two. :D . I've been on a Dexter kick lately ( 8O) and to a lesser extent, House M.D. Really, that's all I ever watch these days.

I only recently learned who Justin Bieber is (horror). I'm so far out of the pop-fad loop that I don't understand 90% of the stuff my sisters say anymore. It's like they're speaking a different language.

Me too kestrel,
I don't get the "Bieber" thing either, even though music is one of my persistent interests. I can't name one song or artist on the charts these days.

The majority of shows on US television are not reality, actually, so I think you're just watching the wrong ones.

You also only named the lowest budget shows in existence on US TV.

You didn't mention any of the great shows which other countries don't come close to competing with in terms of quality and sophistication such as The Wire, The Sopranos, and even Breaking Bad and Mad Men. Sherlock is one of the only international shows I can think of that is close and there are only a few episodes of it.

There are tons of other great shows on US TV. So many that I can't even list them all without spending hours..

If you get cable, and it sounds like you have MTV, you may consider paying a little more to get premium channels such as HBO, which has some pretty good original programming. TNT is a channel which solely features dramatic series. Mad Men is on AMC. TV triggers sensory issues with me, so I can't watch it. I don't even own a TV now.

In response to your question, I watch it mostly because I am bored and despondent, but I usually don't let it get to that point. Also, I have not watched much tv for a long time, and I am just curious to see what it's about these days. Thirdly, I have not been watching any american TV for at least a few months, because for whatever reason that's all I had to watch....So, IDK I feel like I have to keep up with things a little bit otherwise I will fall into this pit of excessive culture consciousness...LOL.

What is generally called "Reality TV" is a format that was pioneered by MTV, and is not real. Pawn Stars is a different kind of show, that can be somewhat informative on the values (and even existence) of some odd items, or educational, such as how to spot a fake Rolex.

Theres nothing good on American TV anymore. Everything is about something trivial that doesn't really matter. One peculiar aspect about the programs aired on american TV is that they seem to have a very scientifically precise psychological element to them that makes it so easy to get hooked on watching one of these shows. It's no wonder people can't stop watching this crap!

I barely watch TV outside of the internet, and I still think you're making a blanket statement...

Anyway. Use the internet for your TV, that'll solve your problems.

This. I won't say I don't watch TV, but I haven't turned on the actual set in months. I like being free to watch what I want, when I want. And there are some shows out there that are genuinely good.

i've always been ashamed of puritanical american tv censorship, compared with the liberality of other country's broadcast standards.
