I wonder about aspies abilities to understand context, or making a connection between a previous statement and a following statement that is an obvious play upon wording. Like saying "I saw it in a movie"; to me that is an obvious indication that it's not true, can't happen, etc., like a recent ID4 mention.

Is humor a function that some aspies lack? Does this mean there are entire genres of literature and film that they can't understand or grasp?

If this is true, I might seem like an idiot to many. Yet many have an ability to juxtaposition an object in their head, can this same ability be used to juxtaposition concepts to arrive at humor?

Is humor related to spiritual belief? I see many on here that seem humorless and well as being very literal.

What can I do be humorous to all when I want to?

Start off a joke with the phrase "Here is a joke..." to remove all doubt and ambiguity. Otherwise, it is likely that others will assume that your "jokes" are part of a serious conversation and further assume that it is you who doesn't "get it".

OK, I was hoping it didn't have to be that patently obvious.

"Here is a joke..." is now copied and pasted to it's own special notepad...

People would often say that to me after they would bully me. They would tell me it was a "joke" and to not take it personal.

Yeah, me too. I thought that might be what this thread was about.

Does anyone think anything in my post is bullying?

No but a lot of bullies have told me they were "just kidding" to excuse their behavior. The topic title could suggest it might be a topic about bullying.

I think I get a lot of humor but not all humor.

I definitely pick up humor, and have a very dry one myself. I also can take things literally, but I'll replay it in my head and realize intent later. Everything was literal when I was a kid though.

Not at all. The thread title just triggered some bad memories for me.

Yes, I am the same in that it took a while to develop. I could understand my sarcasm or irony, but I guess understanding others was a learned thing. Replaying it was the key I think too. Part of my "two track" theory maybe.

I pick up on humor as well, although making jokes is somewhat...meh. I've been told that I have a dry sense of humor or even dark humor. I've made people laugh but it is more of the "point out the obvious" type jokes.

"point out the obvious" type jokes" <those are the best ones ! !

As an Aspie, I have found that without explicit declarations of such, speculations and out-of-context humor seem to elude me. This is why I earned a degree and took up a career in Electrical Engineering. Anything not related to my work is easy to spot and ignore while at work. For instance, if I'm discussing the transfer function of a lambda diode, and someone mentions how his wife has a negative attitude and is resistant to new ideas, I know that what he said is unrelated to work and therefor unimportant.

It is easy for me to assume that anything outside work that is included in a general discussion is somehow relevant to that discussion unless stated otherwise. This is why I don't socialize much outside of work.

It would help greatly if people would preface their claims with phrases like, "In my opinion..." or "I believe that..." or "It seems as if..." or even "What I'm about to say is only a joke". If not, then they should expect me and other Aspies like me to assume the literal meaning of their statements, and learn to live with it. Otherwise, they seem to have a problem with tolerance of real Aspie-like behavior.

I don't get a lot of jokes. Most jokes are not funny to me. I take most jokes seriously.

However, I am told that I am funny and my jokes or sometimes serious statements are funny to others.

@Fnord, Do you have a favorite joke? By the way, telling us this does help, helps me understand you a bit better anyway.

Do you get Cornflakes' signature? "Giraffe: a ruminant with a view."

I get humor pretty easily, but my problem with is it that I'll find something hilarious that no one else does. Something that's said on tv or the radio, or in the paper etc that seems ridiculous, ironic, moronic, redneck, impossible, etc. If I point that out and laugh, usually people just look at me. Sometimes I think something is funny when people go overboard with qualifiers and I think "as opposed to the opposite" type things when the opposite is impossible.

Sometimes It's hard to resist answering something very important with something funny. Like that "Well it's not to build an army of zombies" that just slipped out when I was applying for a receptionist job at a funeral home and he asked me why I wanted to work there. My oldest son once did that on a test. This was in grammar school and the question was "What is population density?" He answered "The ratio of smart people to idiots". His teacher was not amused.
