So I just read Oedipus the King (a more simplified translation, but interesting nonetheless) and I still can't get over the Oedipus/Jocasta relationship. I mean, what does it feel like to love someone to find out IT'S YOUR MOM!?

I read it because we are reading Antigone in class (Antigone is Oedipus's daughter/sister. Woah)

Also, I was thinking about all the family relations that get complicated.

Creon is the brother in law, but also the uncle.

Antigone and Ismene are his daughters, but also his sisters.

His sons are also his brothers.

This means the children of Jocasta are also her grandchildren....

Lauis is his late father, but also... wait, there's nothing. He just happens to be a murder victim and a former king

I start to wonder the age difference between Oedipus and Jocasta...

Ugh. Oedipus... few other books have incited so many shocked gasps or disgusted groans from people in a class around me

That's like a story where some twins who were separated at birth got married, and then the man got prosecuted for incest. I can understand getting into the relationship in the first place, but something would be horrifically gross to me if I found out I was related to the person I was having a romantic relationship with. I don't know if I could continue it.

There's also a movie that deals with this kind of subject, but I don't want to post the title because you don't find out that this is what's going on until right at the end; it'd ruin it for anyone who hadn't seen it.

PM me the movie title.

Anyway, I'm just soooooo curious about the relationship dynamic between Oedipus and Jocasta. I don't know why.

I can't get over Oedipus either. Just thought I'd share so you know you aren't alone in thinking that. :)

Haha why is everyone posting the titles in italics? And surely I'd be giving it away if I was to confirm or deny either of those? ;)

Yes, I recall the torture of reading it while a freshman in high school. They ought to ban that book because it violates the 8th Amendment banning cruel and unusual punishment.

Very funny.

I still wonder what Oedipus's thoughts were when he was exiled. I mean, he had to feel some attraction for her if she was his wife... 8O

Well, he did love his mama...;)

Italicizing book titles (Ships, etc) is just a stylistic convention, it's what's supposed to happen. The manual guys in Chicago said so...;)

Oedipus makes me lol every time I read it. (Between english and theater classes, I think it's 3 or 4 times now.) I am oddly fascinated with incest as depicted in fiction, but properly horrified of it in real life.
