I'm new, my son has Asperger's

Hello All,

So happy to have found you. My Son is 19, he's just been recently diagnosed w/Asperger's. Initially, he felt very betrayed that I thought something was "wrong," with him. At our first appointment, he sat with his head down the entire time. It broke my heart. I love this kid, he is so amazing. Gradually, with the help of our Psychologist, he has warmed up to the idea that my primary reason for getting him help, is to encourage his successful independence. He's still not happy about it.

My hope is that he will eventually want to be a member here himself. I will let him introduce himself, if/when he does. For now, I'm Paige.

Welcome!

I encourage you to have your son join WP, as there is a lot of great information and support. At first, a DX can be rather disconcerting, but it can also be very helpful. For me, it revealed that I was NOT wrong/bad/broken/etc., just different. Now that I know I think and act differently because of the way my brain is wired, I don't feel bad/guilty about how I am. A DX can make it easier to see the positive qualities one has.

I have only been officially diagnosed today(have suspected for some time)and I feel great, although it helps that I have friends who have gone through this already.
