Ads pay for the site. No ads, no site.
A good reason not to install an ad blocker actually. In fact there have been a few times that I have clicked through ads (I generally click through interesting ads at sites that I want to support since who knows maybe it'll turn up something interesting... I think I did read an interesting article about diagnosis once in one of them, but cant remember the site for sure)
What could be done by Alex or whomever helps with administration/finances (although I assume it's all him) is to relay the issue to the ad vendor, to let them know that advertisements with audio drive traffic away from the site, which will result in less ad revenue for them not just here but other places.
However... so far I have not seen the advertisement again. So my guess is even if he hasn't told the vendor that there have been enough customers who have.
My intention in mentioning that I also have had this issue is not to get advice from those who have patches to bypass the issue but to assist in reporting disruptive features on the site. Chances are this sort of thing will affect a lot more than just 2 users so I am happy to also report that I haven't seen it happen again yet.
