Autism Acceptance Day and Month Update

Autism Acceptance Day 2012 is in just two weeks! The official date has been changed to April 2. The entire month is Autism Acceptance Month, also started in 2011.

In this second year of Autism Acceptance Day we are continuing to add links and posts to the Autism Acceptance Day blog. I am requesting posts about autism Acceptance and your ideas about Autism Acceptance Day and Autism Acceptance Month. You can write a post about Autism Acceptance, or Autism Acceptance Day, and I will add it is a blog entry. Or send links to blogs and sites that are acceptance-focused. Posts can be either full-length, or if you only have time for a sentence or two, to let your voice be heard about Autism Acceptance, please don't hesitate to participate. This does not have to be something that requires a lot of your time and energy. It's important that a wide variety of both Autistics and non-autistic supporters be heard.

I still want to call the day "Autism Appreciation Day."

Can you say what you think the difference is between acceptance and appreciation? I kn ow the two words have different definitions but am interested in what you think.

Alright, the word "acceptance" can mean two things:

1) a full-bodied zen acceptance where what is being accepted adds flow and texture to life and is viewed as a good thing, or

2) as something a person merely tolerates.

Whereas the word "appreciation" more clearly means the first.

All this aside, thank you for getting in there and doing something. The movement for Autism Rights and Pro-Spectrum and Pro-Neurodiversity needs a lot of different people doing a lot of different things. I'm just trying to potentially contribute to a worthwhile discussion.

That makes sense. I was using acceptance to mean *more* than tolerance, and it seems mostly to work, but I did have one person write to me yesterday, whose idea of "acceptance" was more like your second definition. I am going to be speaking on AWN radio on March 30 and would like to include the concept of appreciation. If you want me to attribute that to you, I can do so. I don't like to borrow or use other people's ideas without acknowledging them if possible.

I'll settle for the second definition, honestly. I'd rather not have people call me an "autistic loser" instead of "ret*d" like they'd get in trouble for saying.

At times I'll settle for the second definition, too! And that is a first step, and hopefully from there, we can move up to appreciation.

If you later forget and run fast and far (and by that I mean, discuss all kinds of wide-ranging issues), that's okay, too. It's almost more important that this and other good ideas be in the discussion.
