H.R. 2288 - No Autism Assistance For Retired Military?
So, my ex-wife's husband is newly medically retired from the US Army. They have medical coverage from TRICARE; however, we were informed today that the ABA therapy for our children, both of whom are autistic, is not covered, because they regard it as an "educational intervention," not something required by their neurological condition. There is a program that has been paying for all but a small co-pay, but that applies only to active-duty personnel, so it no longer applies here. So, despite the fact that Morgana's actually started reading, and Iain is learning better how to interact with people and wait his turn, all therapy has been halted as of today.
Research on this point seems to show little knowledge of or attention to this until about a month or so ago, when House Resolution 2288, requiring autism therapy to be covered for all dependents of personnel both active and retired, was introduced. Even so, the groundswell has been small so far. I'd like everyone here to do whatever you can to network, in our own limited aspie way, to support HR2288. If you're in the US, please write to your Representatives about this. Contact your senator. Write to the President. Notify your local news media, and agree to be interviewed, if that's what it takes.
Please, raise awareness of this issue. We can't abandon the children of our veterans just because they can't go out and shoot people any more. There's more information >here.<

Sadly covererage has a whole lot of gaps, its worse for adult autism sufferers. I disagree with that policy methods of evaluation. And i support bills, but i support help for everyone with ASD and i will speak, but sadly being aspie i am afraid i may say the wrong thing because gee, all the help for kid aspies is not there for adults with the same problems that have struggled entire lives to deal with. So those of us with some societal function need to get past the walls of ourselves to really publicise and sadly we may need to show some of our problems to public even if we get very red faced in process. Te greatest challenge is getting to get people to really think instead of being mindless gimme objects.
