are there any other Aspie's out there who have problems with math?
I have dyscalculia and I wondered if anybody else has problems with math because it's said that people with AS/autism are often very good at math.

Considering it took me two years to grasp the concept of long division...no, you're not alone.

On the other hand, I like working with spreadsheets and poring through statistics and stuff like that, but more traditional math is a major weak point for me.

What is discalculia?

I have problems with some aspects of math. For instance, I have a lot of trouble doing simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in my head, especially if I have to do it fast. Actually, sometimes I can do it but sometimes I can't. When I was very young, I could add and subtract three digit numbers in my head, but I haven't gotten better (for a while I got worse) because it's hard for me to do things in my head now because of anxiety, sensory problems, and distractions. When I hang up the numbers, they just fall down.

Once I got past that part, though, I never had trouble, and I've been in advanced math since fourth grade. Now, I'm taking Honors Calculus in college, and I like it. It makes me happy to do complicated math because it feels good whenever I finish a problem. It feels like I just climbed a mini-mountain and I'm looking over everything from the top.

I tend to pick up difficult concepts easily when they are explained right, so math is rather easy for me, depending on who is teaching me and how they are doing it.

I did not understand math until I had a quasi-breakdown and came out of it with absolutely nothing left of my old internal thought system. I had to reconstruct everything, but I ended up better for the experience (i.e. a better writer, better at math, more curious, and better at electrical engineering.)

My math skills are, and always have been, a disaster.

Dyscalculia is actually common in those with AS because it's common in those with NVLD/NVL and many people with NVLD/NVL have AS.

I have dyscalculia. I can barely do basic math. That was the one subject I failed in high school, grade 10 math. I excel in the language arts and social sciences.

I also have dyscalculia. This was largely why I was placed in the LD class, when I was enrolled in a state school. It took me awhile to learn multiplication. I was finally able to learn times tables by using a combiniation of the "touchpoint math system" , and adding, and/or subtracting from the figure before or after the figure I'm trying to find the answer to. Touchpoint is sort of like Braille for dyscalculics, which have commonly been refered to as being number blind anyway. :) Here is what it looks like. Image

I've always had very poor maths skills.

Personally, I'm great with math. The only school subject I'm not naturally good at is Social Studies.

I've always had problems with doing maths I can add up and take away a little bit more as I went and had numercy lessons.
I can't do division and as for measuring and fractions I could never grasp those.

I'm pretty good at maths, Got A @ A Level.

However, I'm not very good when it comes to counting, simplistic calculations. But when it comes to algebraic equations, calculus, statistics and all that crap - I find them easy. Very bizarre.

Not bizarre at all. Most mathematicians that I know are not particularly quick at calculating with numbers. Mental calculation is more of a party trick, it doesn't have all that much to do with mathematics. But if you want to prove that a mental calculation trick works, then you're doing mathematics.
