It's because humans are hard wired toward three distinct flavors:
1. Sweet
2. Salty
3. the flavor of fat

These flavors, unfortunately, are associated with unhealthy foods like sugar, table salt and fat, of course! It's so weird that humans are so attracted to these flavors that do not occur naturally that much in their surroundings, except maybe if they live near an ocean or source of salt. If they are growing wheat or barley, not much flavor there. Not much in many wild berries, leaves and roots, either. Meat, of course, has fat, but it's mostly the big game that has a lot and humans long ago relied on fish and small game more. So why did humans evolve to be so attracted to these flavors?

Maybe because in the past these things were so rare that you ate what you could when you found it but now we generally have access to whatever we want whenever we want but we still have an unneeded urge to gorge on it?

One possibility is those are the flavors associated with foods that benefited our ancestors' lifestyle the most but had limited access too. They had to be much more active to survive than modern man. Fat helps people who lead very active lifestyles and not eat much food keep energy levels up throughout the day. Sugar is associated with energy spikes while salt is a naturally occurring electrolyte. Active creatures would benefit from foods containing these flavors.

That's true, sugar was once a luxury food item that the wealthiest people enjoyed, and for most of human history, our ancestors did mostly physical jobs so they were able to burn off the calories they consumed, and when times were hard, they lived off their fat stores until things improved. Now, most people tend to have very sedentary lifestyles, especially at work where the majority of the time is spent sitting in front of a desk and computer. As a result, we have that obesity crisis in Western society, and in the US, the NCLB act getting rid of recess and PE, kids are getting fatter as well. There are other issues contributing to childhood obesity including learning from their parents that processed food is cheaper and better than healthy food, and the paranoia of the pedophile lurking everywhere that prevents parents from letting their children play outside as much as us adults used to when we were children.

What's the point of this thread? First of all, humans are programmed to Like food that tastes sweet. Secondly, humans are (usually) programmed to like meat, eggs and so on because we need more proteins than other apes.

A lot of unhealthy foods (eg. wheat) has very little taste.

I agree wholeheartedly. Meat is both delicious and healthy. Add to this the fact that certain types of dirt have medicinal properties and I do believe that the original point of this thread has been successfully disproven.
