Post the specs of your computer
Your loss - Intel's got AMD solidly beaten the last 2-3 rounds. There's nothing obscure either... the i3 has two cores + 2 hyperthreading cores, the i5's have 4 cores and speed boost, the i7's add another 4 hyperthreading cores over the i5. Way better performance at about half the voltage and not a huge difference in price either.
>>> ANANDTECH bench utility - compare processors.
Those game specs are particularly nice.

That's another thing. The fact that there is a difference in price means that I will go with the cheaper chip. I don't have very much money, so anything I can save on means I can afford more RAM and Storage Space, which are the two things I am constantly short of.

Then the Intel G530 for less than a lousy $40 absolutely *obliterates* anything at even close to its price range. No question. Check the link and compare the Pentium G620 (essentially the same chip with a tiny bit more cache) to anything you want. I totally understand budget rigs...
This i3 & mobo only cost $150 CDN, another $40 for 8GB of crazy-fast RAM... only $50 more expensive than an absolute bottom-end system but twice the performer.
ThinkPad T420:
Arch
14" 1600x900 display
Dual core 2.80GHz Core i7 2640M
Intel HD Graphics 3000
8GB 1333MHz DDR3
160GB SSD
9 cell extended battery
I wish I'd saved a few hundred dollars and stayed with the stock i5 'cause the only time I notice the difference from the Core 2 in my last notebook is when compiling stuff.
My home computer which is always on and server as a telephone server mainly:
Name; Marsupilami
Pentium MMX 166 MHz
128 MB RAM
1 GB compactflash
10 GB harddisk handled with hdtune (will start turning on when used and mounted)
Asterisk software with ISDN S0 emulation
running and running and running...
Acer Aspire AM3970-EB11P
Intel Core i5 2320 3.0 GHz
8GB DDR3 SDRAM
Nvidia Geforce GT520 1GB DDR3 video card
Two SATA hard drives totaling 2.2 TB
Two LG disc drives - 5400 and 7200 RPM
12 USB 2.0 ports
I have Ubuntu 12.04 with the Cinnamon desktop on one hard drive and Windows 8 release preview on the other hard drive.

Location: in my own little tamarillo jungle,
then again why not free up the i5's internal gfx and use the flops for something else, (they are essentially cuda enabled computational cores, they do help when doing general calculation)

Whether you use the graphics core of the i5 or not, the computational power remains 100% identical.
You're right about gaining a tiny bit of CUDA performance from adding the video card... not many CUDA cores in that low-end card though.
....and I've had to sell off the nifty machines I had - sold off at profit to pay the bills when someone fell through on paying me what they owed.
I downgraded to a cheap Dell Dimension 9200 which I've upgraded with spare/cheap parts to a Core2Quad 2.4 w/ 6GB DDR2 and a couple 500GB drives. I have a 64GB SSD lying around that I'm deciding if I want to keep in the laptop (instead of a 500GB lappy drive) or move to the desktop.
Oh well... it's no spanky 1155 machine, but with a video card upgrade to a fanless Radeon 7750, it's totally silent but plays Skyrim at max detail. I guess it'll do.
Finding a cheap Q6600 was a real boon... it was only a Core2Duo E6600 before that.
Gigabyte x58A-UD3R
I7 920 @ 2.67 Ghz
6Gb Ram
ATI Radeon HD 7770 as of today (Did have a Nvidia GTX295 but it broke)
2 Sata HDD 1 500GB 1 80GB
650w Corsair PSU
Acer 24" Screen running 1920 x 1080 60 Hz
Everything in my PC apart from the GPU is around 5 years old now. I am glad it's still going strong

Nvidia GTX 680 2GB

That's a sexy pc. Be careful about that SSD though. They are prone to breaking easily. How much did that cost you?

$ 4387.96 (based on current exchange rates).
I got a new computer recently which supposedly has great specs, but I'm really disappointed by how it runs. It overheats all the time if I don't keep the cooling pad on constantly and for all the processing power, it runs a lot of things discouragingly slowly. The physical design of the computer is also really frustrating. Only 3 USB ports, all on one side. Power plug in the back so I can't push it against a wall. Trackpad doesn't work properly and Dell isn't doing anything about it. Wifi doesn't work properly and I have to be plugged in to the router to get any decent internet connection. "Chrome" siding around the edge is painted plastic which is simply glued on - I've had it a few months and it's already fading to brown and coming off in some places. I bought it for video work and live VJing, so I'm pretty frustrated. I guess the conclusion is, don't ever buy a Dell.
However, the specs should be fairly impressive, I think:
Intel Core i7-2640M CPU @ 2.80 GHz
8 GB RAM
NVIDIA Geforce GT 525M - 2GB
500 GB HDD
256 GB SSD
Can't find the full list of specs, hope that's enough to give an idea anyway.
32 GB DDR3-1600 Kingston Ram
240 GB SSD (for operating system), 1 X TB HDD, 1 X 2 TB HDD
Nvidia GTX 680 2GB
Iiyama 27" screen running 1920 x 1080 at 120 Hz
what games do you play on that computer?
FPS, RPG, RTS, TBS (can't wait for the release of X-Com). Basically, anything I like. I also play classics like BG(1/2/ToB) and PS:T on my current computer. But my entire point of coughing up so much money for a PC is that I can buy *any* game and then max out settings without having to worry about performance.
I *literally* got dizzy, by the way, the first times I played both Battlefield 3 and Borderlands 2 at 120 Hz. This makes a massive difference compared to my previous 60 Hz monitor. Might be a priority if one likes first person shooters...
