The costs of mating with less than perfect (whatever the hell that means in evolutionary psychology this week) mates are much higher for women. That explains everything from pre-menstrual emotional hypersensitivity to variation between sex drives in men and women to comparative "universal willingness" in men.

I'm not surprised at mainstream men being so sexually willing. It's only enlightened selfishness on my part that makes me different. Just that the idea of finding out whether a woman wanted to sleep with me within 2 sentences of conversation blows my mind. Are one-night standers really that blunt?

The other interesting thing is that women still seem to be the gatekeepers of sexuality, at least when there's nothing but lust on the table.......if they were as gung-ho about sex as the men, everybody would be at it like knives all the time.

I have a feeling that the statistics are rendered inaccurate by the fact that many of the men may have only stated they would sleep with the female questioners out of pride. Many men in our society feel they need to appear virile, so regardless of their true feelings these (young) men may have answered 'Yes' simply to appear like macho men! And when it comes to the women, they may have been more reluctant to admit a desire to sleep with a random stranger because of the negativity surrounding women who appear to be promiscuous.

The simple reason why female one night standers go only for the very attractive guys is due to the high demand, hence they can afford to pick the best of the best-looking for a fling.

Well spotted........the sample isn't necessarily representative of humankind. Especially in the age department, and I suppose most teenagers who have just escaped parental control for the first time are likely to be a tad licentious when it comes to sexuality.

And ive also read one that indicated the reason for women being pickier is because they are the "gatekeepers", the study made two groups of people (men/women) and first made men approach women. The men were less picky about who to approach and women more picky about who approached them. They then made women approach and men be the gatekeepers and then the women were less picky over who they approached and men more picky over who approached them.

So yes, there is a magical exception to reproductive strategy, because casual sex is not a reproductive strategy but an emotional one
