I've noticed that next to every post in the forum, is the profile of the poster, which includes their personal information. But strangely, the gender of the member is not shown. I believe this is important, because in a lot of the topics I read I feel that the gender of poster is highly relevant to the topic.

If you're that bothered, you can usually see the gender of the poster in the Profile.

Some members may prefer this to be not immediately visible and it is nevertheless available with a single mouse-click.

You'll also find that "gender" is in itself something of a hot topic for profiles (see other posts in WrongPlanet.net discussion) and some of the suggested ways of accurately reflecting what a member regards as their gender would likely require bigger changes to the avatar display window than could be accommodated.

I just write my gender in my signature, because people kept on mistaking me for a boy because of my nickname (they must have thought I was very gay because of the way I talk about men a lot).

I actually got the nickname ''Joe90'' from a coach driver I used to fancy for a little while, who everyone called Joe 90 as a nickname. :)

I like that its not immediately apparent. There's a purity to it. Just the words, just what is being said, considered on its own merit and by itself, without any preconceptions polluting the purity of the ideas.

I am more interested in people's posts than in their gender. So, no don't display it.

Why are people starting to comment in my nickname? Just found it in another thread aswell? I've been on here for 2 and a half years and nobody's commented on it up until now.

^^ Yeah, saw that. I hope my comment made him think a little more than he had so far on that thread.

I know, thank you. I felt that person was belitting me. If he really wanted to comment on that he could've sent me a PM (if it is a ''he''?)

I thought your name came from Joe as your nickname (Your real name is Josie right?) and 90 for the year you were born in. Funny coincidence.

I took the Joe to be some adaptation of Jo which could be an abbreviation for many female names.

-----

What really confuses me is when posters use an avatar with a picture of somebody of the other gender. Even if I know the gender of the poster it still causes odd metal images.

There is a similar issue when age is involved. In PPR when someone realized they didn't actually have an arguement I have been called "young" and close to a personal attack because of my age (a couple unnamed posters), because I am younger than some people that means I do not know what I am talking about

I like that my age is there (I could easily remove it) because people have a better understanding of what I am coming from, but it also can have an adverse affect.

Sometimes it's important for others to know your position/situation/state, if you want to express something about that, talk subjectively about experiences, relate to others in a similar position, etc. But the rest of the time it just seems to get in the way. It's all about context. Sometimes age, gender or whatever can be a necessary context but often it isn't, and it's interesting (I would argue it's useful, even) to be able to communicate without irrelevant contexts sometimes.
